Moving Detolf Cases - whose done it?!

A few years ago I bought a Detolf case on sale for cheap, and it's awesome. What's not awesome was I lived in a studio apartment at the time, and the display had to stay at my parent's house, neglected, until I could get a new apartment.

I just signed a lease application, and will be getting that new apartment with more room for fun displays! :cool

But now, I need to somehow move the Detolf from So Cal to Nor Cal... and I'm not quite what the best way to do it is.

Pack it in lots of foam and bubble wrap and wedge it in the moving van?
Take it apart?
Sell it locally and buy a new one up here?

Anyone around here have to deal with this before?

Taking it apart is your best bet. All the bubble wrap in the world won't stop a bad flex from destroying the case.
It will take some time but will be way safer for transport.

I had to move 2 detolfs a few months back. I didn't have the time, energy, or patience to dismantle them. They survived a 2.5 hour drive in the back of a U-Haul truck (14 or 17 foot), plus moving up and down a few flights of stairs, unscathed.

I just pulled the shelves out and wrapped them up individually. I laid down large beach towels on the floor of the truck (snow had just started falling, so it was going to get dirty and wet in the truck) and laid the detolfs on their side with the doors facing up. Some good padding all around and you should be good to go.

Liz,
Take the shelves out and run cardboard around the case and then tightly tape the whole thing together. Put a few pieces of tape on each side before wrapping it to keep the glass in one piece if it were to crack in transit.

Also, they are only $65 to get a new one if it is too much of a pain to pack up.

I am sure you can find someone locally that would buy it from you. :)
