Moulds - spraying acrylic directly into

Blad

I had a stupid idea today when I realised the ludicrous amount of time I spent cleaning and preparing urethane casts and the heartache of 'fisheyes' in the paint from a tiny remaining fragment of silicone release agent.

I thought: "Why not spray primer or paint directly into the mould? It's only acrylic, shouldn't harm the mould and the urethane should 'stick to it'."

Imagine my surprise when it appears to work.

Also had the benefit of producing a bubble-free cast.

Needs finishing and other colours applied of course, but I tried chrome-aluminium acrylic automotive directly into the mould and the results are great, useable as a base for other colours, no fisheyes, uniform paint.

I'm just expecting the moulds to melt into a small pool of gloop infront of my eyes but they seem fine.

Anyone else tried this?

Yeah I've heard of it being done before, I've personally never used acrylic before but hey if it works...I'd say the results speak for themselves.

You should try powdered pigments some time, it'll be a hoot. Like metallics or pearlescants.

My favorite trick is brushing on wood grain patterns into the mold, the casting comes out with a very decent faux wood grain. It's best to use a very dark or black resin for this.

After this, you must try fillers, aluminum powder is quite neato...don't breathe it in...it's muy toxico.

Smooth-on has a great aluminum filled resin. Saves you the trouble of buying it separately and adding it later, and it looks brighter than the clear resin I was adding nickel powder to.

Unless you use some sort of spray-on release before spraying in Paint,
in many cases it will wear down your molds faster...

Thanks for the info.

Lots of stuff to try out and 2 weeks of holiday left to try it. :D
