Most Underrated Rock Guitarists?

PRINCE!!! Definitely Prince. I would say he is not only an underrated guitarist but an underrated musician. That guy kills any instrument he picks up. I have nothing but the utmost respect for him.

John Mayer is another one. The melody line alone in "Neon" is one of the more difficult riffs I've ever tried learning (and I've been playing for over 21 years now). And to add insult to injury, the guy sings over the top of it too. Most people only know of his "pop songs", but check out his trio stuff. Absolutely amazing. The guy can play his butt off.

Definitely agree. I forgot how good a guitarist he was until I was reminded of the RRHOF jam of "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" with Tom Petty, Dahni Harrison (who is eerily a spitting image of his dad George), Prince, Jeff Lynne, etc.

Guitarists are usually rated according to how spectacularly they can improvise in blues scales, with speed an essential ingredient. This standard generates the usual list of virtuosi: Hendrix, Clapton, Blackmore, Beck, Page etc. with someone like Dave Gilmour coming pretty far down. But if the criteria were sound invention and texture, Gilmour needs to go pretty much at the top, not for anything from the Wall or Wish or Moon but for the noise he makes in this '72 clip from Pompeii - it's just some of the most exciting and unique sound in existence:

You do realize Gilmour is NOT an underrated guitarist though, right?

In all fairness, most of the guitar players named in this thread are not underrated by any measurement I can think of... Except other folks' opinions.

Took a while for Gilmour to make it into the guitarist hall of fame and even then the recognition was for his later mainstream solos, not for the early experimental stuff - which is still underrated. Same goes for Barrett. OK, I'll nominate Syd Barrett instead, for his similar work in guitar sound/texture experimentation.

Dann Huff (Giant) - Time to Burn, Stay, I'll See You In my Dreams

Scotti Hill (Skid Row) 18 & Life, I Remember You, In a Darkened Room

And the best of all.......

Glenn Tipton (Judas Priest) his solos are epic and majestic! You *must* check out Beyond the Realms of Death - beautiful song, stunning solo - up there with Beat It as the greatest of all time. Also Reckless, Electric Eye, Heavy Metal, Private Property and Touch of Evil.

For me most underrated guitarists are the ones on Youtube (parra, erock, etc). Their actually more then often playing equal or better then the Original like example above.

Wes Borland.

That guy just plain sucks :lol
He is mediocre if that.

What I find humorous is that people will argue that their favorites are the best until they are blue in the face.
Each person considers themselves the authority on what is a great guitarist and who if overrated. : lol

I completely agree with that opinion based on the 'band' he's in, but like the comment that blasted me for my opinion.. To each their own, right? I think he's an extremely talented musician and artist and have followed his career outside of that 90's band crap.

My vote goes to Mike Scaccia. He sadly passed away of a heart attack after collapsing on stage last December at the age of only 47.
Most famous for being a longtime member of Ministry and offshoots such as Revco, Lard and Buck Satan and the 666 Shooters.
He was a founding member of the influential metal band Rigor Mortis.
He had a fast and fluid tremolo picking technique in an arsenal of well rounded playing styles.
A great guitarist and a nice guy.
