Most Underrated Rock Guitarists?

I agree with Prince... He is overshadowed by his pop radio music and for his songwriting. But that guy could shame many players out there. He is just so damn good.

This thread is full of some over rated guitar players and others that are well known. Under rated is someone thats just that. Look up Martin Mull sometime.
Amen...David Gilmore is NOT underrated, or an unknown. He is a hugely popular kick ass axesmith.

That said, one who doesn't get much recognition anymore in my opinion is G.E. Smith.

Ahh, excellent pick good sir! G.E. Smith seems to be well known among musicians (I mean, he toured with Dylan for how many years?) and might vaguely be remembered as the SNL guitarist, but he is often overlooked.

Gotta toss in Phil Collen from Def Leppard - the guy is incredible. Steve Clark complimented his style - the both of them together for get about it.

Is this a thread for the greatest guitarists??? I thought it was for UNDERATTED players.
People keep listing all these wel known great guitarists...
The OP was asking for guitarists that people hardly know because they haven't gotten their due recognition.

Gary Moore, was great.

If you want an interesting doco to watch, track down "It Might Get Loud", with Jimmy Page from Led Zepplin, The Edge from U2, and Jack White.

3 generations of guitarists, talking about their careers, their influences, and a bit of jamming. Well worth a watch !:thumbsup

Dexter Romweber (FLAT DUO JETS) ...although he does seem to be finally getting his dues...

Kevin Shields (MY BLOODY VALENTINE)

Kevin Shields (MY BLOODY VALENTINE)

Not a virtuoso, but nonetheless, he's got some great guitar sounds and textures much like the Edge from U2 (who I'd also add to the list).

I'd add Daniel Ash to that list for the same reasons
