Most Underrated Rock Guitarists?

Omar Rodriguez Lopez. He gets slagged off as being a noodler, and he's definitely capable of going full speed off the deep end when he's in his free jazz/experimental mode, but when he's focused and checked by a good producer/project I think he produces some really remarkable, atmospheric/psychedelic stuff. The Mars Volta's early work is sits comfortably in the pantheon of classic progressive rock albums, imo.

Greg Tribbett. Not a lot of folk know of him and maybe even less now because Mudvayne have disappeared (and Hellyeah kinda suck) but he is awesome. Adam Jones also springs to mind. I know, I know, He's not underrated. Well his name doesn't get thrown around like so many others and doing 10 min solos does not constitute a good guitarist. Jone's art is amazing also. Wonder if he's a member here? Loved the prince vid. That guy is a musical weapon!

Rivers Cuomo!!!!!!!!!! Hugely underrated. Great Solos combined with clever lyrics in his songs. e.g: The Sweater song and say it ain't so.

You guys should really check out Guitar George. He knows all the chords. But it's strictly rhythm -- he doesn't wanna make it cry or sing.

Joe Satriani... For as many years as he has been around, if I mention his name to the average person, I usually get a "who?"

I love his c.d. "Surfing With The Alien" as much now as when it first came out in the 80's.

Jeff Healey..........
most just know him as the blind guy with funny playstyle. i say he could meet up with the best and beat them with pure brilliance

I honestly love Weezer but never considered Rivers a great guitarist. He is good, don't get me wrong, but not to be considered one of the greats.
Most of his solos are not great and many are just playing note for note, the melody line of the song and that is it. His Solo in Dope Nose is pretty good but having seen them in concert numerous times, I was never impressed by his playing.

Don't think he goes off the page much. Rivers is a phenomenal guitar player though. Check out his hair metal days. He can shred. But people there to see Weezer want the pop rock they adore, not Rivers ripping it up on guitar. I am impressed by his restraint because if I had his guitar chops I would just be melting peoples faces off night after night.

You want underrated? Rick mother-effing Springfield. He gets so overlooked because of the 80s soap star thing but he's a pretty damn good guitarist and an awesome songwriter.

I respect your opinion, he is an awesome guitarist. He is great, but obviously not one of the greats. He is no paige or hendrix or young. But he is underrated. As a fellow guitarist myself. I understand the difficulty of coming up with a good solo. But this guy comes up with awesome melodies. I mean the my name is jonas intro is pretty awesome, to come up with something like that is pretty sick. He is definately a creative musician but obviously he is not one of the best, but he is a phenomenal guitarist. he may not exactly be that complex. Same with John Frusciante, but i do think he is underrated. LONG LIVE WEEZER

You can rate guitarists differently .I feel John Frusciante is over rated just a bit, i feel he is rated more on his rhythm over his lead. I love a John and Rivers equally, but i honestly prefer rivers because of how complex his lead is combined withhis rhythm guitar. But others may beg to differ so its really personal opinion. Obviously Rivers is not one of the greats, but he deserves some recognition. He may not of been some child prodigy that could play every Hendrix song aged 12, but he is an awesome musician. along with Bradley Nowell of Sublime who is also under rated.
