It's been a busy paint week. Also, I created a jig and process for creating those cool little narrow spots in the acrylic rods. I think they are called tamper rods. ... I thought about trying to sand them into a rod, maybe using a drill. That sounded like a pain. So I tried using my acrylic strip heater, wrapping it arounf the rod. In a couple minutes I was able to pull the rid like taffy creating exactly the right look. Then it was building a jig so I can replicate exactly the same effect 40 time!
In the spirit of being curious what the original prop master (Robert M. Bouffard based on Google searches?) would have sourced/ found inspiration from for some elements of the Rabbit's Foot construction, I found two things:
1. The top counter digits maybe have been from something like an industrial feed counter. Or possibly even a hand counter with a white digit on the end. Maybe it was cut down to three from a longer row of other numbers to fit the top?
2. The screw caps on either end of the red cylinder of death have always felt like aluminum bottle caps to me. If you look at the top cap compared to the bottom on the original prop, they're slightly different!
The top cap has taller vertical knurling while the bottom one's knurling is about half as tall. I wonder if they used two physically different caps for this purpose? The doming of each one could have been done with some sort of press to punch out a rounder form to it without breaking it apart.
FUN! Very plausible on the caps. For the number dial it;s definitely inspired by that sort of counter. But the screen-used prop simply had a sticker (see attached) ... For my replica here I modeled the number into a dial, but it's stillstatic.
Oh my god! How didn’t I catch that was a sticker? On first viewing I assumed the plastic window over the numbers was peeling off, but sure enough that’s a flat sticker
Okay folks, these are all built and getting some final detailing. If you have already paid, THANK YOU. If you haven't yet Please check out the payment details on Page 1.
I'm also including a replica of the Blueprint for the Rabbit's foot you see in the film!
Also, I feel like I'm violating some NATO regulations having 20 of these in my house. So, let's get them moving
