Military models show off thread - open to everyone!

Urgh, now my armchair machismo immediately disintegrates under the lightest of scrutiny. He was flown over there in June of '42, after the AVG was dissolved and replaced by the 23rd FG. He did take pictures of the Mustangs, which strikes me as odd. He only worked on the P-40's, AFAIK. He was in China from 42-45, when he was sent to DC to work as an auto mechanic for NACA, before finally being discharged.

I don't have any of the reference material that remains, my mom (his daughter) has most of that. I know we do have some period paperwork, including his Pan-Am ticket jacket for the trip over there. She did have him reiterate the whole story on videotape, at least once. I have some bad scans of bad photos, that's about it.

Yep, got my first armor kit at about 11, a 1/35 tamiya leopard 1. I was hooked after that. Then I discovered plastic card which I still use to this day when I build my props. I just can't spend hours on these tanks anymore. When you're young you think you will live forever and have all the time in the world. How things change.

Really fascinating mate, Yep things changes and fast.. in a blink everything is different... When I was 14/15 I was very frantic... fussy.. a party boy.. always away from home I would never had the patience on that times to build models... till a couple of year ago I was still a party boy (old boy LOL) and today... well.. the age came.. I do prefer stay home and build models rather than go out to party ;) How things change! Indeed!

By "plastic card" you mean styrene sheets?

@Master Blaster: Sorry to hijack your thread, man.
Can't wait to see your Hurricane finished (I knew it was a Hurricane by the shape of the wings).:thumbsup
Looking FANTASTIC so far. Such a cool idea. Only thing that would make it better is if it was at the bottom of an aquarium. ;)

Thanks again Axlotl.

Don't put ideas in my head man!!! PLZ! :D
I have a Computer that runs inside a fish tank fulfilled with mineral oil (an Oil PC so to speak) I could easily give up the idea of the "block" of water effect and put this "diorama" as an insert inside my PC. ha!

Hey man, its not MY thread its OURS THREAD... you are welcome to do whatever you want. Do not need to be sorry man!

So, go and get a camera I'm curious to see your Flying Tigers!

Not at all. It's not easy putting the pieces together.

He was flown over there in June of '42, after the AVG was dissolved and replaced by the 23rd FG.

The AVG was dissolved July 4, 1942.
The 23rd Fighter Group was activated after the July 4 dissolution.
So your Grandfather was probably sent in anticipation of the merger with the USAAF.

BUT
... The 14th AF wasn't activated until March of '43.
So the 23rd Fighter Group operated independently as part of Chennault's "China Air Task Force", until the 14th was made operational.

So, congratulations - your grandfather was a Flying Tiger.

I know the new unit kept that name :) They still have it: http://www.moody.af.mil/library/factsheets/factsheet.asp?id=4460

Back on topic: I built the Tamiya 1/35 Sd. Kfz. 222 a few years ago. It's a neat looking vehicle, I think, and a good kit despite it's age, but I never painted it. May have later kit-bashed it into some half-assed sci-fi thing. Parts from it show up on some Star Wars filming models, and Trek models & props... I think that's the only 'real world' modeling I've done in my adult life. Badly botched a Studebaker Avanti. Lots of sci-fi. Have a bunch of armor kits unbuilt in the garage, though. There was a time when I'd cruise HLJ and just pick-up whatever was on sale, figuring they'd never go bad, and I'd just build em when I got around to it. Not quite how it turned out.

yeah we call it or its called plasticard over here in the u.k.

i used to build my own stuff out of it when i was waiting for kits that i had ordered through my local model shop. i guess this is what made me so good with it,

practice makes perfect and all that. i now buy the stuff in big sheets as it works out a lot cheaper and i know i will use it.

Hi to All,

Cool, Isn't? But, I did not find any model (wreckage or not) underwater... I mean undersea models.

Thanks for looking.
MB.

Nice work!

There are dioramas of undersea models. curiously, there are more afv vehicles than airplanes. (maybe there was more tanks than planes over the sea? :lol)

This vignete, won a gold price in the model contest or Leganés (Madrid) 2015. It´s belong to Javier Morón. I take this picture from a revue (Euromodelismo, nº 265)
I saw it in person, and I taked some photos, but I don´t find them now.

Here you can see a diorama with the same idea (but worse than yours)

Wheatherin the white is hard. Easily you can overpaint.
I like the rusty escapes, and the dry earth wheathering.

Just for interest, There are a serie of videos from Adam Wilder, thar are awesome.

Holly crap! This is amazing!
I did try to find more photos of it online but no luck. Do you have any idea about it's scale?
I wish I was working in a larger scale so more details :p would you try to find more of your photos? please?

The other one is nice too, I just think It's a little bit heavy of paint. But as he said "pacifico es digamos un océano de aguas calidas y hay bastante vegetación he utilizado tonalidades calientes de verdes..." so maybe he is right with the colours.
I have the same problem with my buildings.. I always tend to be exaggerate :wacko

Thanks for the links mate, will be handy.

And many thanks for the compliments.

Undersea WWII wreckage plane - UPDATE #1

Well, I did a little of (test your patience! a-ha!) work... adding some vegetation/corals.

As I said previous post: "I have this problem with my buildings.. I always tend to be exaggerate"
So guys what do you think? please, give me a honest opinion, is that too much?

Notes:
1 - I did one side only.
2 - I plan to dye the water medium with blue food coloring, so the pale colors will pop like I said before and hopefully the vivid coral colors with blend cool.

With the birth of my hindrances (children), I haven't built anything for about 13 years! Here is some of my older models that I kept. I threw away a bunch of them.

Eduard 1/48 Albatros. Not that anyone can see the scratchbuilding on the inside, but it is there!

Completely over-weathered Tiger tank...

I don't remember what this was made from. I think two kits and a resin conversion. This plane is, or was in the Museum of Flight in Seattle. I hate Seattle btw!

You guys know that there is a 'Show your model collection' thread pinned at the top of the General Model section,....it caters for all models......& it is stuck there,.....it would be a pity to see some of these great models on this thread sink into the depths of the Gen Model section
