I was heading over to New Zealand again this year for the opening of The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug and needed a new costume for the Red Carpet Tours Premiere Costume party in Wellington. So for something a little different I decided to make Merry and Pippin from Bilbo's 111th Birthday party in the Fellowship of the Ring right after the Dragon firework blows up in their faces.
I asked my friend (RPF member conceitedape) if he'd be interested to go as Pippin and then started on the outfits.
I made all parts of both costumes, shirts, trousers and waistcoats, altering patterns to get the right individual shapes.
I did each row of red embroidery on Merry's waistcoat with my sewing machine on to some yellow velveteen, one by one in each direction to create the right repeating pattern:

I didn't have anywhere near enough time to exactly match the beaded trim for Pippin waistcoat so I found some nice 2" wide bullion embroidered paisley pattern Sari trim with a green background, unpicked some sequins and sewed it on to the front:

Here's both costumes all clean and pristine before weathering:

So the afternoon of the party we got the nice clean costumes out and in the Hotel Bathroom and started to cover them in some fake, black ash powder. I also had some fun styling our wigs too
So we got into our outfits, put on our ears, wigs and foot hair, did our charred ash makeup and made our way to the Roxy Cinema in Miramar.
We had heaps of fun and we very well recieved by everyone, also winning a group prize judged by the 6 guest actors there who played Dwarves in the Hobbit trilogy (Jed Brophy(Nori), William Kircher(Bifur), Mark Hadlow(Dori), Steven Hunter(Bombur), John Callen (Oin) and Peter Hambleton (Gloin).
Here's some shots of us that night in costume:

With actor Jed Brophy (Nori and Party MC):

(Slightly off topic :$)
Just because I want to show off my awesome RPF shirt I got just before the trip: A few days after the party we all went up to Matamata to visit the Hobbiton movie set and thought I'd sneak in a few pics of that
:
Bad End (I didn't get an invite
):

Sam's house on Bagshot Row:

Sitting in the Green Dragon with fellow RPFer BBprops, having an Ale and checking out my Daniel Reeve(Artist who made the original) Prop Replica Thorin map that I picked up from the Weta cave a few days prior:

We plan to wear these costumes again to a convention here in Australia at some point in 2014 as they are heaps of fun, but this time make up the Firework prop to carry around (even though it's post explosion, still a fun prop to go with them).
Thanks
