MCU "Fancy" Midgard Thor and Loki

So this wild idea started with a plan MouseMeat and I had to make Rule 63 Thor and Loki movie armor. That's a big undertaking, so we decided to tackle "casual wear" first. I was going to do Thor's plaid shirt and jeans from the end of Thor, and she was going to do a combination of Loki's Midgard suits from Thor and from the Germany scene in Avengers. As she started working on hers, she decided to do a more original take on it, starting with a green and black suit as the foundation but adding more gold and stylistic details reminiscent of his Asgardian clothing. It eventually turned into something less like his movie suits and closer to a suit version of his movie armor, or at least very heavily inspired by that. At that point I decided to put aside Thor's "human" clothes and make a suit version of his armor as well. So the whole project turned into high-fashion business suit versions of the movie armor.

We're close to finished with both costumes, so this is more a recap with a tiny bit of up-to-date posting at the end than a completely in-progress thread, but we thought it was worth showing off anyway. (Our joint costuming Facebook page with fairly regular in-progress updates is https://www.facebook.com/TwoGirlsSewing?ref=hl )

These are the designs we came up with, and which she sketched for us. We've made a few tweaks here and there, but this still gives a really good idea.

For Loki, Tony's description of Loki in Avengers - "full-tilt diva" - and this comics panel were a big inspiration and starting point. :p

We repurposed a vintage grey wool blazer I had and dyed it emerald green. (It looks a little washed out since I use the camera on my phone to take progress photos while I'm working, but in person it's really vivid.) It turned out really well, and someone who didn't even know what the project was said it reminded them of Loki. Doesn't get much more promising than that.

We paired it with a vintage vest I had, and it's hard to tell most of the time, but it's not black - it's actually a very, very dark green. Probably no one will notice it, but since Loki's Midgard suit overcoat in Thor has a green undertone, we thought it was a nice touch. (And please excuse the cat/dog hair. It's unavoidable sometimes.)

MouseMeat already has a dress shirt and black pants, and she ordered some really awesome green/gold embroidered/embellished flats and found some perfectly gaudy gold jewelry. She also ordered a beautiful gold antler (reindeer games!) collar chain from DapperandSwag on etsy, and I'm sure she'll post photos of that.

For Thor, I basically just directly translated his armor. I wasn't trying to match any particular variation from any of the movies, I just wanted the overall placement of color and shapes to be reminiscent. I wanted a silver or grey dress shirt for his silver armored sleeves; a vest in a grey or brown for his chest armor; blue pants; and a red tie and/or scarf for the cape. Luckily I already had a lot of stuff that fits the bill.

This was my starting point. The shirt is a silver lame-type fabric, and I had actually come across it by chance before even starting this project and grabbed it at the time because it was too cool to pass up. It turned out to be exactly right for this. The pants are hard to see here but they're just navy blue wide-leg linen trousers. The vest is a grey-brown herringbone wool, and the scarf is red silk. The necklace is chain, seed beads, rhinestones, sequins, and small metal disks (better photos below). The round rhinestones and metal disks on it were a nice plus. There were very few other ways I could work the weird chest circles into something like this. And high-fashion bonus: the tie is Gucci.

After some indecision, I made alterations to the necklace. It originally had black ribbon attached to each end to tie around the neck, but I wanted really particular placement of the embellished squares. So I removed the ribbon, sewed snaps to the backs of the squares, and added corresponding snaps to the front of the shirt. Because it didn't lay well against the front of the vest, I tucked the chains in with the tie instead. I also found an alternate vest that's very similar in style to the first one but was a bit roomier to allow for some tailoring. I lowered the neckline into a deep V (it originally buttoned up to just below the tie knot), and eventually I'll be adding silver buttons in front and a red panel in back (and possibly a matching red collar).

With the necklace and shirt being so bright and prominent, there's not a lot of other jewelry I really need (I'm still debating some big cuff bracelets), but I did find these earrings in my stash and they're perfect. Whether they'll show under my wig is another question.

We also both made some hair doodads (technical term) from chain hair combs and metal facings. Mine is silver with antiqued silver double wings, hers is gold with antiqued brass double snakes. And of course, we both had to have corresponding weaponry. Her Tesseract is from CosplayProps on etsy (and it's awesome - I highly recommend it, and she definitely agrees), and my Mjolnir is the adult-size Disguise hammer.

Next step will be vest alterations and finding some shoes for Thor, wig styling and a few last tweaks for both, and generally putting everything together.

Oh, hey, look, I'm here with an update, too!
The few things I have to post (considering Keepcalm has half my outfit in the jacket and vest :p)

First up: hair!
The wig is a Jareth Long in Jet Black from Arda (it has yet to be properly pinned and trimmed, just like all my wigs) and I then wanted to make it more visually interesting. So I bought a batch of wefts in Mirkwood to create some nice, dark green highlights to go through. It should look really nice considering the half up-do we plan on for this. Photo here for color comparison:

Accessories (cause they're half the outfit with Loki): in place of bracrs, I have a couple of different styled cuff bracelets. One is gold with the black studding because I figured there's prolly a little punk in Loki somewhere; the other is just a gold triangle and zigzag motif that I weaved a tie through to put a little more black in there (thus bringing the two bracelets together a bit, too) and, while I was at it because my black leather watch band is kinda busted, I took the watch face off and tied it to the bracelet because why not? Now I still have a watch on, too. Both bracelets are from Charlotte Russe.
A very cool antiqued gold snake earring/cuff because Loki and snakes.
The rings, though I wish there were more, are just part of my everyday jewelry, believe it or not. the small one is a diamond and emerald cocktail pinky ring that belonged to my Nana and the other is just jewelry wire twisted to fit my finger, courtesy of a friend who got bored at work one night.
My favorite is the collar chain I bought. DapperandSwag on etsy is amazing, 10/10 would recommend. And I got antlers as a nod to Tony Stark (since he's my favorite Avenger anyways.).

Thanks so much! It's been a lot of fun finding pretty stuff that works for the characters and putting it all together.
(And your Fem Marvel costumes are fantastic, by the way! I've been following your Captain America for a while now and it's been a big inspiration to keep me working on mine.)

Wow! Good luck!

If everything goes according to plan, we should be done and have proper photos in two weeks or so. Getting close now.
