McQuarrie Stormtrooper Thread

Yeah I think a vacformed shell over some kind of gasmask-filter undercarriage might be the way to go (you need that deep undercut in the chin area I think, plus the face looks like a thin "hood" over the open mouth area). But the helmet could still be an assemblage of vacformed parts, doesn't need to be heavy or mechanical.

On the neckseal, yeah I had the same concern. I think there must be some high, cylindrical neckpiece under the helmet, similar perhaps to C-3PO's neck.

I hope the suit was not intended to show bare skin under the helmet from low angles, but that's what we ended up with in the final film anyway. :lol

I suppose some kind of balaclava under the helmet (as clearly seen on the "spacetrooper" with helmet off in ANH production photos) would take care of that, but there does seem to be an armored neckpiece over top of the neck.

Re 1950s high altitude suits, yeah, something like this, which was often depicted as a spacesuit before the realities of actual manned flight had to be contended with. Pix via Global Effects.

Just for kicks I sketched up a front and side view... actually I think the McQ2 is very close to the actual screenused Stormtrooper design, only more angular, narrower, and more "facemasky" if I can make up a word. :lol

Put another way, you get the screenused helmet if you start with the McQ2, smooth out the transitions, make the skullcap rounder, make the helmet wider at the sides, rearrange the chin gadgets to make it easier to manufacture, delete the neck ring, pinch down on the middle of the eye area to make two eyepieces instead of "goggles", and add "ears". :D

Nice work, Phase.. I'm going to have to send you an armature and some Klean Klay. I usually will attempt a concept drawing before starting the sculpt. But, mine never look that good. And, certainly never that fast. :D

I really am developing an affinity for the face shell concept, with breather gadgets formed seperately. Little more involved to produce, but a very cool look.

Thanks. :$

But you are da man with the Klay... I could not do it unless you want a replica "Lumpy the Spud Trooper" helmet. :lol

Absolutley stunning......I read through the thread so forgive me if it was mentioned and I missed it but what medium are you using to sculpt this with? I am assuming its some kid of clay...is it oil based? again great work on this...-

Thank-you.

Klean Klay. I'm sure there are other preferences, and superior clays - Chewie15 would be a good guy to check with... ;)

Looking forward to seeing this peice finished.Glad to see your making progress Allan.I know it can be very time consuming making moulds and sculpting.I would suggest vaccing a plaster mould before spending money on a resin and aluminuim mould to see if everything is 'right' with it.It might not fit the dome or look right when it's formed and then you have to either make another or fine tune the resin mould.Anyhow, good job so far. :thumbsup
