BTW where does that "Old Stormtrooper" painting come from? I had been assuming it was from the book "The Illustrated Star Wars Universe", but it ain't in there. :confused

Yeah those proto-stormtroopers roaming the corridors brandishing one-handed saber and shield are quite a sight.
I had forgotten a couple of years ago Hasbro issued an action figure of the McQuarrie Stormtrooper. But the sculpt sucks Ronto eggs.

The fig is actually pretty lame... mine broke seconds out of the package.
The Trooper Saber on the fig does look quite a bit like this "McQ" saber that I had made for me a few years back tho.

The helmet looks AWESOME... I agree on the lenses needing to look "meaner". Perhaps bringing them up to the top with only a radius at the bottom rather than having them come together like a tear.

It's from The Mos Eisley Cantina Pop-up book (1995).
The painting was a new one done for that book though. It's not original ANH concept art.

Do we really know if the Cantina Popup Trooper (as I shall dub thee :lol ) illo was actually painted by McQuarrie at all? Or is it just done in the style of McQuarrie?

He was the ONLY illustrator for the book.
He also painted the Jabba's Palace Pop-up book.
Yes, the trooper art was a "reimagining" by McQuarrie of his original concept art.
He actually did a LOT of new Star Wars work in 1995.
A good chunk (maybe half?) of the Illustrated Star Wars Universe book was new artwork.
He also did the packaging artwork for several MicroMachine Action Fleet playsets.
1995 was a real big year for new McQuarrie work.
Before then there actually wasn't much unpublished McQuarrie artwork maybe some old sketches, but all his movie paintings had been published already. It's not like the prequels where they have piles and piles of unpublished artwork left over.

I guess it's his idealized version of a path not taken for the armor design.

Talk about a helmet. And I would so be up for one. it would be a fun and nice addition to my collection.
Heck owning a full usit of MQ style armor would rock also. Talk about away to honour him if hes at a con doing signings. Too bad the general masses would probably think of them as a clone trooper varation. But us "geeks" would know the truth.

I think you're on to something in that post... keep in mind that these early concept helmets are heavily influenced by "gas mask" designs. I do think that the "type II" McQ concept (as I shall dub it
) is sort of a "face shell" on top of a gas mask type of apparatus.
I'm not entirely sure the "center knob" in the recessed chin part of the "type 2" design is actually a knob, it might be the bottom of a longer cylindrical "filter cartridge" that would fit up inside the "grin" part of the mask (under the center part of the grin, which looks like it has vertical grooves in it)
Or it could be that the center "knob" is actually a short vertical tube, not a disc at all.

K - that's what I was thinking. Not sure, yet, if that makes my job easier, or more difficult. Easier to sculpt the shell face. A bit more difficult, perhaps, to pull some castings of the face, then sculpt...or....? the gas mask portion. There is nice "reveal" potential with such a mask. Also, the neckseal is a bit problematic... Whaddya think? Looks rather like the helmet to body connection on early high altitude and space suits.
