Master Blaster Cosplay - Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome

I am evaluating the possibility of creating a Master Blaster costume to wear for next year's www.smallvillecomiccon.com, June 20-21, 2015.

There are not a lot of reference photographs available online and the images I have been able to obtain are not always clear. There is a good model out there but there are some subtle differences between its sculpt and the images I do have. I do not believe I am in a position to create a completely screen accurate version, but I want to make a good effort. I am reaching out to this community with the hopes someone has better photographs and help with the identification of various components.

For Blaster I need help beyond the vintage hockey glove and catcher's knee pads / shin guards. I especially would like to identify the torso medallion and find better images for recreating it.

For Master I have a couple good photographs of the saddle back frame worn by Blaster, but I have none of the costume worn by 2' 11" actor Angelo Rossitto.

I am also concerned with leather and would like some ideas for alternative fabrics which breath very well, yet still look awesome. My body normally runs on the hot side and being leather clad during June in Kansas is a recipe for disaster.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Okay this task is proving more daunting than I thought, it may have to go on the back burner pending further research.

I believe the shin guards are vintage Rawlings model #16DCW based upon measurements and features. If I am incorrect, someone please correct me. If there are a larger pair than 16DCW, I hope someone can advise.

The shoulder sections I have identified as the knee caps from a tactical shin or elbow guard. I have had the opportunity to examine a pair locally and have yet to determine which will be the more appropriate size. I believe the pants are a type of motocross protective padded pants, or modeled from them...still looking. The boots may be the 14-pair eyelet leather paratrooper combat boots with the seam across the toes. My challenge is finding a pair to fit me because I wear size 14, I would prefer a used pair, but may have to settle for new.

The glove is proving more difficult to identify than I expected. I believe it may have been based upon a type of goalie blocking glove as the outer "fingers" do not separate.

Even with hours of vehicle crest searching, I am still no closer to identifying Blaster's torso emblem. Having difficulty identifying the emblem on Master's helmet as well.

Unfortunately, I do not yet have a Blu-ray so I am unable to view, let alone capture clearer images. Still hoping someone out there can help.

You should probably find a small person to go as Master as well?

Actually, I am thinking along the lines of trying to recreate Master using a scale sculpted face. Ambitious, yes; but I want to challenge my skills. Unfortunately I am involved with the building of several other costumes for Smallville ComicCon and this one may have to take a back burner due to both the difficulties I am encountering and the investment in the other costumes. But this will get built.

There is the beautiful 1:6 resin kit to use as reference…

I will try to find better photos.

Thank you for all the support. I guess I am going to have to hit the gym and start some sit-ups and get to creating this monster.

Well I finally received the movie on DVD and several hours later I have obtained 98 screen shots with specific references for this costume. Unfortunately there could have been more but the resolution was still poor and the overall film dark, casting most details in shadow. I believe Master wears a modified fireman-style or miner-style helmet with "Samurai" flaps that have little gears on them. The side ornaments are wings, not horns, and the top ornament is not a spike, but a small bird.

I was very pleased to identify Blaster wears standard rubber boots, available inexpensively at my local farm store; instead of the expensive paratrooper boots I originally thought.

I was also able to identify how all the straps on his suit work and interweave with his helmet. Now I just have to sketch out the design, obtain some measurements, and start considering fabrication needs.

I have reached out to the Mad Max Museum in Australia and the Mad Max Costumes website; unfortunately the crest on Blaster's torso remains a mystery. Research continues.

Master Blaster runs Bartertown!

To pull off this costume, I am going to have to cover up three prominent tattoos. Other than make-up which I know I will sweat off; does anyone have additional suggestions?

I have a friend who is about Master's size and age, and we've joked about doing MasterBlaster...but I'm nowhere NEAR big enough to even fake a convincing Blaster! Good luck!

Life hit us pretty hard lately and we have had several family issues which forced a change in priorities. Things are finally slowing down and I wanted to provide what update I could at this time. I have not gotten as much accomplished on this as I have been devoting what free-time I have had available toward the Road Warrior costume builds I am also working on (http://www.therpf.com/f24/mad-max-road-warrior-multiple-costume-build-224575/).

However, I did obtain a pair of rubber boots from a local farm store for Blaster. I am still having difficulties finding a pair of Rawlings 16DCW vintage shin guards. If anyone can assist in sourcing a pair, I would be greatly appreciative. I also got a pair of knee caps from an old pair of rectangular tactical knee pads to build into Blaster's shoulder pads.

I picked up a youth size helmet and sunglasses for Master.

And finally, I believe I have identified the emblems on Master's helmet and Blaster's torso shield. I am working on an update with comparative photographs which I will post when completed. I do not yet know what is on the banner above Blaster's shield emblem, still trying to figure that out.

I hope to have more soon...
