Mass Effect 3: Lime Green Foamshep - PAX2012 Photos

Oh god, another foamshep build :)

My buddy Nate took some photos of my new Mass Effect Costume at PAX this weekend. Figured I would show off the work on here.

I went with a slightly different build than usual. Capacitor armor in a few parts. The Capacitors were cast in urethane. I went with a limegreen paint job to use up the rest of my Buzz Lightyear paint.

Pics incoming!

A few build details.

This is almost entirely foam. I didn't use the textured side, because I wanted a different look. So instead I painted on the bits of carbon fiber.

The mask was almost entirely done in 1 day. It's ugly and not finished yet. Eventually I'll make it perfect.

The costume was very comfortable to wear. it's a complex set up with a lot of straps and connectors. The chest piece can be detached, and the ab plates flex as I move (Lots of elastic bands).

I did the hip pieces so that they move when I move. I can run, sit, jump and kneel in this thing.

I have a very large build. 6ft, 225 pounds, so no existing patterns work for me. So this is entirely custom patterned. I did look at a lot of peoples patterns though for inspiration.

The hand plates are styrene. I figured out a trick to super glue a small piece of foam between the plates. This makes them hold together perfectly. This trick I plan on remembering.

If this costume gets worn again, I'm going to finish a few painted parts. Eventually I'm going to detail the undersuit.

The glue used was Super Glue and Hot Glue. It's covered in Plasti-dip spray as welll to seal the foam. I'm not sure how I feel about the texture of Plasti-dip though. But it's very tough, after spraying is low odor, and it holds paint pretty well.

It's nice to see a shep costume that looks different than the other millions I've seen. Looks great! :)

This is AWESOME, and I really appreciate that you had to draft your own patterns, because I'm doing the same thing. And that you chose a different armor set (lime green Shep def has personality). The carbon fiber painted on looks great.

I'm curious about your hip pieces, how do they articulate? I'm planning on doing that too, because I'm sure you noticed that disc-piece lands in a weird spot, which totally makes more sense to have them capable of moving. I have some ideas sketched but, not thrilled about hopping into the suit several times to test it out, hah.

I wanted a different look than all the other ME armors out there. Shepard cosplay is becoming as common as Halo armor at conventions now, partially because it's not super hard to build, and because there are easy to follow patterns out there.

Originally I was going to do the default armor and all in plastic, i wanted a sharp, tough metal look, but time and the cost of casting everything meant that this wasn't in the bag. So I switched to a foam build and I'm glad I did.

I'm not big on doing costumes that others have done before, it's just a personal preference. I did General Kael from Willow because noone else had, the Witch King, because almost noone has. I did my 'real' Buzz Lightyear because noone had done it before for the same reason.

When doing this, I changed to doing the capacator armor with some other slight modifications to it. I also have a very stocky build so default would have looked weird. I should have done Defender armor or done James Vega, but I never used him in game and my buddy Bill over at Punished Props did Defender armor.

The lime green was a last minute idea. My first thought was to do this completely in Buzz LIghtyear colors. White armor with Lime Green and Purple and change the N7 to a LY for Lightyear. But that was treading on last year too much, so I opted for just using some of the same paint.

The most wild idea I had, which I might do next year. is repaint this armor, but do Helly Kitty Mass Effect. Hot Pink and White with hello kitty logos all over it. Then put on some fake scars and do Renegade Hello Kitty ME3 Shepard. Next year...

So I uploaded a full set to my flickr with has a ton of photos of the armor: ME3 Foamshep - a set on Flickr

The hip pieces are all really belt attachments. I just made little elastic bands that went around the belt, and then glued those bands to the armor pieces. I even have a bag on the belt that I can put stuff in, like a wallet or cell phone.

I can completely disassemble the belt and move things or update things if necessary. It's 6 completely different pieces, front piece, overthehip arches, circle-flexors+hiparmor, and the back piece. It's not quite as canon-strict, but it's far far far more comfortable to be able to literally run around in your costume, sit down, squat, dance, or lift up the Queen of Dragons. In my V2 of this I plan on making the illusion that this is all one piece.

If anyone has any questions about any part of the costume, let me know.

How'd you handle your under suit? I ended up scratch sewing full one piece lycra suits and screening the weave on as I wasn't happy with the idea of having the bottom of the shirt showing between the ab and thigh pieces.

Thanks for explaining your hip pieces!

If you do the Hello Kitty version, you should have a very serious bro-face. With some chin stubble, battle scars, etc. It has my vote.

The Queen of Dragons really compliments Shep, indeed.

Black athletic pants, and my shirt is just Underarmor brand compression shirt. Which is a very comfortable, but tight black athletic shirt. Eventually I want to pattern it. But for now I can at least use it for my Brazillian Jujitsu.
