mask molding help

I just got a few different facial demon molds from Angel. I am trying to figure out how to make the lightweight foam latex wearable facial appliances out of them just like they would for the show. Any help would be much appreciated.

The mold is made of a harder detailed substance on the outside and a tougher foam core.

I've never made foam facial appliances, hopefully someone else chimes in that has.

It looks like you have a master/plug. So you'd need to make a mold of that with a keyed flange. You'd also need a face cast and key that to the mold of that master/plug so that the eyes/mouth lined up as best as possible. You'd then be left with the needed space to make the form fitting appliance.

A less exact way without a facial cast would be to make the mold of that master/plug, use some clay to fill in and approximate the appliance thickness & then make the back 1/2 of the mold (equivalent to the facial cast).

Not much to go on, but my experience in this area is limited to slush casting latex in a plaster mold for just some bullet/cut type appliances.

you need the core mold to make an appliance. ie, the actors face the demon was sculpted on.

you could try it with a generic life cast but you will have misalinement issues and horrible ages.

my advice would be to make a plaster mold and use that to paint in layers of latex. that way to can keep the edges thin but build up a thinkness around the rest. wont be as good as a real foamed prosthetic but is probably the best way to go.

How can I make a core appliance without damaging my current prop. ALso where is the best cheapest place to by the latex you are talking about. I have never done this before. I appreciate the help.

chris, you really cant make the core from what you have there.

how rigid is the bust you have, is there any flexiblity to it?

There is very minor flexibility it is pretty sturdy. It is really very hard outer coating with very little play unless you really push on it.

in that case, i suggest making a silicone mold, then casting a urethane rubber skin with a soft foam filling and then using that to make a plaster mould

wow that is alot of molds. lol What kind of urethane rubber skin are you talking about. I have silicone would you paint the silicone on and then use fiberglass as a reinforcer.

If your going to be appling them to yourself or someone else, you can always do gelatin appliainces. You don't need a core or facecast for it.
Plus they look far more realist than foam lalex. Cheaper and no mixer,3 beam scale or baking required. Like foam latex, you use makeup and spiritgum. The edges of the appliances are much easier to blend. I haven't done it in so long. But your end result will be very cool. You might find a demo on youtube. I'll do a search.

if your not sure of the products, give smooth on a ring, they shouldbe able to suggest a few products if you tell them what you are trying to do.
