Marvel's Eternals

I just watched the teaser once and while I'm kind of tired of superheroes in general, if the concept is interesting in terms of how they use the genre to tell a story, I'm open to it. I'm not necessarily excited about this movie because my knowledge of the comics is very limited to what little I knew from my childhood, but I am intrigued by the concept of this movie of a technologically advanced and evolved people influencing ancient civilizations from earth.

It looks more subdued and the tone of the trailer is what interests me because it could sort of reestablish that sense of wonder to the genre by framing all the fantastical elements of superpowers through the perspective of the ancient earth civilizations who would view these superheroes as godlike. In that way it could make superhuman feats appear fresh to the audience and that will serve the story well and will help the longevity of the brand as a whole. I like that it doesn't give away plot elements and is more interested in establishing tone which feels fresh to me than just a bombastic rush cut of action set to melodramatic music like most trailers we get in this genre.

From a design perspective I'm not keen on the costumes being hyper stylized. I get that comic book movies are known for this type of thing but it would be nice to see more pared back designs. It's just a personal gripe of mine and extends to most movies in speculative fiction so it's not a severe criticism of this movie. I'd just prefer to see more functionality to costumes in general than stylization, even if they are trying to pay homage to their source material.

I'll have to watch the trailer again but I'm intrigued by it for sure.

Idk. While this new trailer did give a sense of the plot, I was actually more impressed by the teaser and it's tone. Does every Marvel movie trailer have to end with a joke?

I’m impressed by the action and visuals in the latest trailer. Much more impressed than I was by the initial trailer. Also I got a much clearer look at the cast, and was happy to see their diversity. However, as I’m not familiar with Kirby’s original storyline, I still have almost no idea what’s happening though. What is this - a Kit Kat floating by the sun without melting?

man. I wish I had taken my comic book dealer’s advice and bought the original series to read. I know I can buy reprints, but there’s something nostalgic about reading the original four color comics with that somewhat musty paper smell.

It’s going to be great movie to watch especially for Comicbook folks who collected the Eternals comic line. Cannot wait to see the action pack portions of the movie. Gemma Chan joining a few folks who made second appearances in the MCU as a different character.

I'm rather underwhelmed so far. Hope we're not in for another "Inhumans" debacle, just with a bigger budget to set on fire.

I'm going to see this movie, just as I've seen all the other Marvel films, but I'm going to be honest. This gives me the feeling that it's the type of movie that you used to see storybook versions of in bargin bins after films flopped in the 80's. It has a lot going on but something about it just feels generic to me. I hope I like it. I want to like it. I don't go see films wanting to have wasted my money.

Not horrible but I think it is very forgettable. Sure you will remember little bits but nothing exactly grabbed me. I enjoyed Shang Chi because the characters were very likeable but disliked how it just felt taped on to the rest of the existing MCU. This one however has almost no really likable characters. There are a few standouts but some of them just behave in a way that would be considered antagonistic anywhere else and others just arnt there for most of the film. Couple that with the fact that it again barely links with the established Marvel universe and you get something interesting in isolation but not really satisfying.

Glad I saw it as it did offer an interesting bit of creationism story but there wasn’t enough else there to make me want a sequel or to even watch this one again. Keep your expectations low and enjoy.

I think that all of the new MCU films coming out that aren't directly tied to the pre-End Game films are going to feel a bit tacked on and unconnected to the overall MCU. Think about it, we've following the exploits of all of the Avengers for how long now? So, introducing new heroes (and villains) is going to be tricky and it's going to take a bit to get used to them. I think that once we get another movie or 2 out of all of these freshmen heroes and we get better a better idea of what they're building up to, I think that these characters will start to feel more familiar and more a part of the MCU. At least I hope so.

I tend to agree with this sentiment. The first phase had the bonus of delivering well known heroes and their origins on the way to the big showdown with Thanos.

It's the natural point to slow things down now and take the time to introduce new characters and arcs before trying to build up again towards something huge. We need time to get to know these new characters before we can care about them saving the universe together by fighting a cgi tentacle monster. That's part of the magic of the MCU, they get you to care about the characters enough that you are invested when they fight the imaginary badguy.

Saw it last night. Thought it was great! A little slow in parts, but nothing too bad. The mid credits scene was cool. The end credits scene though really surprised me. Didn't think they were going to go there yet. Dying to find out who the voice was.
