In fairness, all male or female fight scenes in film/tv vary pretty wildly. But, I want to look at female character fights for a moment - where opponent can be male, female, alien, or whatever, and we the viewer are being sold on scenes where a physically smaller-framed-than-most-men female is dropping down henchmen, villains, etc.
I know there are many more, but here are a few examples:
- unconvincing, Columbiana
- slapstick, Leeloo in Fifth Element
- cinematic, Black Widow in Iron Man 2
- ?, Xena or even Buffy (sorry, I didn't see them!)
on Aos, there's something about the whole Bobbi/Mockingbird portrayal that keeps feeling inconsistent to me. I can't figure out if it's the actress, the lines, her movements, or what. It just feel like in some scenes it's on, and sometimes it's off. But her fight scenes seem fair enough.. ..I'd say consistent with expectations or even better than average for a female action character in a normal action show/film.
But with Melinda May's fight scenes, wow, the AoS team really hits some home runs and just keeps selling it strongly. Is "believable" a good word here? Her character is skilled and tough. She's not twisting and bouncing all over like AoTC Yoda. To me as a viewer, her fights feel like she's someone who has the bruises, cuts, and scars the next day. And as the saying goes, "you should see the other guy." After this episode, we get to see her damage on the inside too.
It takes a team to pull that off, so well done, Agents of SHIELD team, well done!
