This thread will be about a jacket I am creating for a family member as a gift. The main portion of the jacket will be made using a genuine Guess vest in a similar style to the Marty jacket. It's a size 14 and will fit this family member. I'm not too worried about 100% accuracy so some liberties will be taken. Mainly with the denim fabric colors matching. I'm using another Guess jacket for the arms and other parts and the color is a little bit off. I will also be making the back two pieces sewn together. I have chosen my friend London to sew it. Below I will attach pictures of his work.

I have some other Guess items I am looking at to make the front top torso, top of the back piece, and the blue details. I hope to have this finished by mid July.

I will use the back of the jacket I currently possess for the two top torso parts and a jacket I just purchased for the top of the back. I will have to flip it sideways for it to work, but I'm fine with that. London will supply me with the blue fabric.

I love this project! Even if it's not screen accurate, I love the idea of building a custom jacket out of vintage materials. I'd love if this thread became a place people share similar jackets constructed this way.

I've been tempted to convert my accurate 84 colourway Guess denim vest into a jacket. Replacing the back panel and adding sleeves as well as lining it. I'm in two minds about it as I know the pocket shape isn't totally accurate to Marty's. That and the fact I know it'd be impossible to have all the found denim match perfectly.

Thanks man. This sort of thing has definitely become a passion of mine. And would you like to show your 1984 vest? I'm curious what it looks like.

It's fantastic, I love seeing the dedication and passion behind Marty's jacket. It's been a design I've been obsessed with for years.

This is my vest, it's a size 20 which fits me perfectly. I'd say it's similar to a modern medium but definitely the biggest size I've seen for a vest. The colours on mine are so rich, I'm sure it's only ever been washed a few times.

You don't have to refer to me as "another member" lol. I'm fine with being mentioned.

Anyways, this is gonna be even better than I expected! I'm certain it's gonna turn out very well, more like this.

How did you get the vest?

By the way, what's the length and width of your 14, Mitas, and your 20, Camturner? I wanna see what the smallest possible size that would actually fit me. Just in case that broadens my options.

These. Pretty sure a "large" would be 24x24, then.

Jeez, I think you might be the only one who's had both colors at the same time! You're a lucky, lucky man, lol!
I'll have to get some pictures out, I took some with the two together. The leather one was pretty worn but at the time if fit me well. I also had a leather 84' jacket which I sold to EmmaInCandyland a few years back. That jacket looks great now that it's been modded. It was a fantastic jacket and very accurate in construction to Marty's. Snap placement and single stitch waistband, I would've kept it if it fit me.

The two vests together. So interesting to see the difference between a size 16 (leather) and a size 20 (denim). The shape of the pockets, the placement of everything. It's fair to understand the difficulties trying to replicate the jacket when there's this many differences between sizes.

Yeah the project is definitely a headache. And as far as we know, size 20 is the only one to have 6 snaps on the body instead of 5. And off course the placement is different depending on if you have a 2 section or 3 section waistband. My vest is a size 18 with 3 sections. Which is currently in the possession of Magnoli Clothiers.

Also, will this be lined in white or with the paisley and Hollywood liner?
The sleeves will be paisley but the rest will be white. Since the jacket will be very small, the Hollywood liner wouldn't look right. The back liner will be the dirt bike logo from a size 12 vest that I sold London last year. It will probably need more fabric sewn to it but that's fine with me.
