Honestly, would anyone expect less from Scorsese? He and crime dramas go together like corrupt union leaders and mysterious disappearances. Nevermind that he's one of the greatest living film-makers and the only one of the 'movie-brats' that still worth his salt.

After seeing Joker, I'm anticipating this movie even more. A crime drama and character study done by a real-deal, genuine, bonafide, A-numbah 1 film-maker. A Scorsese movie actually by Scorsese.

Absolutely fantastic movie! One of the best of the year, with amazing performances from the leads. The de-ageing CGI was better than I expected and barely noticed after a while.
On the negative side, the actors faces looked younger but they still moved like old men which was sometimes strange to see. But overall one of the best movies of the year and the long runtime is fully justified. I was engrossed throughout.

9/10

I had to break it up into two parts because I didn't realize it was three and half hour flick. Overall I really enjoyed it.

Always a pleasure to enjoy Scorsese's narrative from one of the characters point of view... but this time it was too long for me. And De Niro looked like a white walker from GoT with those blue eyes

Thats what it was! I couldn't figure out if it was the de-aging or what but now its definitely the eyes.

I used to love his movies, and this type of movie.

But wow, what a piece of garbage compared to modern styles of movie making and story telling.

It was nothing more than a swan song for him and his legacy actors. It was The Expendables but worse. Actually, I feel bad for comparing it to the Expendables, because at least those were amusing, though predictable.

I guess I'm bitter because I was really looking forward to this movie, and it started out just like an 80's movie and carried on like an 80's movie. At one point, I'm 1.5 hours in, and I'm so too far in to quit, to I keep going. And it's a horrible movie. Di Niro was never a great actor, but wow, old Di Niro is just appallingly bad. The only actor that was decent, and this is sad, was Ray Romano.

I don't need giant explosions, gore, or super fast paced action in my movies. Or every movie has a stupid twist now. I LOVE good dialogue-driven movies, but this did NOT even come remotely close to that.

I'm amazed I made it to the end of this one...I don't mind slow films that are interesting but this sure as hell wasn't interesting. It just seemed to go on an on and I hate to say it De Niro is a parody of himself, every actor in the film has played their parts before in other films. I can see why no one wanted to give this one a wide theatrical release.

I gotta say...

I have/had a few gripes..

1.) SLOW
* I guess was expecting a bit more 'action' with this being a gangster movie..... not that things didnt happen. Just that they happened slowly.. and mostly 'matter of factly' to me.. no suspense, no thrill

2.) * I know this was by design, and that De Niro actually made a comment about this.. but his daughter's (Anna Paquin) role was a bit stale for me.

It was clear they made her 'silent' stance something they wanted to you grasp from the jump. But it was awkward... even her (finally) one time she speaks didnt offset it that much for me. (but I do get the 'importance/meaning')

3.) OLD.. they are some of the greatest actors from our generation.. but you can see they are really old in real life and they way they moved came across as such. (I get they started making this in 2007..but still)...

The scene where De Niro beats up the shop owner for pushing his girl?.. TERRIBLE!.. his posture, his movements?.. (foot stomps and kicks?) Dont ruin him or this movie for me!!!..... is all I could think at the moment.

I'm genuinely surprised by how many of you didn't enjoy it! I was gripped from start to finish and thought the acting was incredible! Pescis screen presence was astounding and well worth him coming out of retirement! I found the ending poignant. It really hit me. I know a film is good when I'm still thinking about it days later.
I agree that they did still move like old men (particularly the shopkeeper scene) but the rest of the movie was so well crafted, acted and directed that saw past the gripes.
Obviously I respect everyone's opinions and I agree with many. Be a boring world if we all enjoyed the same things!

While I loved the movie, I completely agree with some of the criticisms. It's a slow movie because it's an old man of a movie. It's what Goodfellas is if Goodfellas was a human being and aged in real-time.
