Hey guys, I am beginning working on a complete iron man costume and would just like some honest feedback/ hints/tips/tricks from you guys. I have read through many threads and there is a TON of knowledge on this site.

I continued working on this and completed the neck piece, Let me know what you think, it still does not have velcro to take it on and off.

Thanks!! I highly recommend at least trying it, its super fun, and very rewarding. At first i was just kinda randomly glueing the pieces together and then, BAM i had some semblance of a helmet!! it was like magic! everything worked well until the end, I have to Improv some pieces to finish everything

that looks damn good to say its your first try! keep at it for sure! only thing i would say is the back pieces on the helmet look like they needed to be stuck end to end and not overlapping ans there looks as if there is going to be a gap inbetween the back on the helmet and the neck seal the way you have done it so far. looks very clean though :)

i guess you used PEP files ?
Any tips on what program to download ?

Pepakura designer or viewer, check out my website for where to get them and the PEP files :)

I noticed that. i had to do some improv near the end because the pieces werent lining up. Ill have to look into changing that and see if i can get the neck and back of the head to come closer together, if not, wearing a black suit under the armor could fix it a little =p =p

Tonight I completed the chest piece. The larger pieces seem to be much easier to assemble than the smaller more complex little pieces (go figure) I am currently using xrobots technique to plastic the foam before priming and painting it, i am testing it out on the helmet and will let you guys know how it goes probably tomorrow. This is a fun project!! sometimes 5 or 6 hours just disappear while im building something

I took today to try and paint a piece. After a few coats of PVA glue, some polyurethane, plastidip, primer, and paint, I still was not satisfied with the painted foam look and decided that I needed a smoother foam and went out and bought craft foam. I will have to redo the pieces I have already made, but no biggie.

So... Camping mat foam will always and forever look like foam, so I started rebuilding the pieces with crafting foam!! tonight I completed the chest piece... again... and the ab piece! Also here is a quick look into my tiny tiny dorm room workstation!! its all i have, so I make it work. Next quest, new neck piece then shoulders (and possibly make a duct tape dummy!!) If you guys see anything that I could improve on, please let me know so i can continue to improve as the suit is made!! I also saw the new Iron Patriot pic for Iron Man 3, I wish i knew how to make pep files well, that would be fun to make!!

nice work so far, what kind of foam are u using for the chest? it seems to be pretty dense! i think it's the same using by laamberry for its mark3

It is just craft foam from any crafting store, its 6mm thick, but it doesnt have any texture (so hopefully the paint will look better!!)

This is extremely good. I don't know what your capabilities are, but I think it's exciting for aspiring builders who may not be as skilled in fiberglass or pvc as others are.

So I'm curious, if you use pepakura cutouts on craft foam, what do you suppose you could cover it all with to make it a bit more durable, at least to withstand slight wear and tear? I suppose the obvious answer is fiberglass, but wonder if there is anything else, again for those of us who aren't quite master builders.

Good work though. Excited to see the rest of it.

The whole idea with foam is for it to be flexible. Fiberglass would defeat the purpose really. There are a couple very good threads about getting a durable hi-quality finish. Check out XRobot`s Thread for one amazing process.

I agree with Master Roshi, I have read all about XRobots stuff and plan on using a combination of techniques to accomplish a good finish! One thing to keep in mind, is to use a foam that is smooth to begin with. Found that out the hard way with the camping mat, its impossible to get the foam look to go away

Hey guys, sorry I haven't posted in a while, training for me has been super busy and I haven't had too much time to work. But in the midst of everything, I made a robin hood costume out of some shirts and superglue (I don't have a sewing machine) I also made some bracers out of a leather(ish) organizer and some braided leather rope. Also used some foam and a pleather makeup bag to whip up a quiver! I am surprised at how it turned out! Sorry for the blurry pics, if anyone wants a closer look at something, let me know
