Man of Steel (Pre-release)

The suggestion of 'maybe' it's right to let kids drown when he's there and able to help them is NOT Pa Kent under ANY circumstances. The answer is 'no, you did the good and right thing, but you can do it in such a way to hide your identity' IF it's a case of deceptive editting of a trailer, then it was a POOR choice to engender such disgust for a suggestion that Clark let children drown.

I still say you're adding your own interpretation into it. The word "maybe" by itself doesn't automatically imply "right thing to do." It *can* be a statement by itself. It can also be a prelude to a longer conversation.

Clark: "I should have let those kids drown?"
Pa: "Maybe you sometimes won't have a choice, Clark."

Clark: "I should have let those kids drown?"
Pa: "Maybe 'Clark Kent' should have, son..."

Clark: "I should have let those kids drown?"
Pa: "Maybe saving them was right, but if people find out what you can do..."

And maybe he just says "maybe."

Point is, we don't know. But *other* lines of Pa Kent's, both from this trailer and the earlier narration from the teaser suggest that the tone of his character isn't drastically off. So I'm willing to give this moment the benefit of the doubt.

The editting of the trailer is clearly designed to make you think Pa Kent IS suggesting that 'maybe' letting children drown when you can save them is a possible choice for Clark. My interpretation is based upon what they have offered in the trailer. If they have a long drawn out conversation about hiding his identity, but yes saving the kids is the right thing, then the deceptive editting is their fault, not the fault of a viewer reacting to the selectively deceptive dialogue.

Under no circumstances would Pa Kent EVER tell Clark that letting children drown to hide his identity was the right thing to do.

This movie is **** if that's the direction they are taking.

The Kents are what MADE Superman what he was. His powers and abilities were simply a matter of birth. What Superman IS was a product of his upbringing.

^This.

Everything before that point had me excited. Everything after that point had me excited, but I'm having a real hang-up over that one, little word and don't think I'm too crazy about the film now.

Unless they add an extended clip for trailer #3 where he finishes the sentence like "Maybe you need to answer that question yourself." or similar I might change my mind...

Clark asked if he should have let them drown. Pa said "maybe." And that's the extent of it *that we see.* It feels like a cut when he was about to say more.

This is what we're given. Just "Maybe" and scene change.

Trailers are meant to get people excited about a movie coming out and when you edit it to just have dialog suggest Pa Kent is suggesting it's okay for a busload of kids to drown, then the guy who decided how the trailer should be edited needs to be fired.

I agree, there's probably more to that conversation than we're going to see in a 2 minute trailer.

The word 'maybe' probably comes up as a response to something else.

Also, did anyone else get the idea that the home town seems to be more of a fishing town? Maybe it was just the shot of Clark on a fishing boat and a house on a cliff side. Seemed almost more of a 'coastal' community.
Then again, there was clearly a farm when we see Pa Kent and Clark talking.

Maybe it's farm-raised fish

I didn't have a problem with the "maybe" line. Jonathan looks almost ashamed of himself when he says that. Remember that when it comes to protecting his son he'll do everything he can. Even if it means contemplating allowing those kids to die. Though out of context you can see it's not an easy thing for him to say or even say while looking Clark in the eye.

^Agreed.^

I actually liked the line. There will almost certainly be additional dialogue, but feel like they use the "Maybe..." to grab the viewers' attention. Which it does. *shrugs*

EDIT: HAI 2 U PAGE 23!

I don't really care about the suit as much, as long as it's a variation on the Superman costume I don't care.

Hey, it could have been the Nicholas Cage fiberoptic cable one after all.

The suit redesign doesn't annoy me in the context of how the film looks in the trailer. In stills, it looks pretty ridiculous, but then again, so does the suit from Superman: The Movie. The suit in the original Superman: The Movie fits in perfectly with the overall look of the film. Put the new suit into that style of filmmaking, or the old suit into this new one and *THAT'S* when it'll stick out like a sore thumb.

But I am annoyed with how long that cape is. That's really the only thing that legitimately bugs me about it.

See, I love the long cape. The one thing that always bugged me about the Reeves suit was how short the cape was. I think the long cape gives a much more regal feel to the overall look. I could stand for a few less textures in the MoS suit, but I like it for the most part.
