Man of Steel costume thread

Maybe Abraham Lincoln would look cool in a motorcycle jacket.
But that would be innappropriate and so is this.

My wife immediately went ugh! when I showed her.

The only get out of jail free card I will give them is if this were a special costume used for being in space or something. Supes has put on some special stuff for certain tasks.
But probably the whole movie he looks like an accessorized waffle.

I try to explain to you. When I was between 4-6 years old, my father introduced me to Superman comics. It was that time where Curt Swan, John Byrne and Dan Juergens drew Superman. Dec 1978 was when Superman the movie came out and my birthyear, so I was just too young to see it on screen, I was just entering the new world. Later my dad rented all the videos from Superman I-IV (fortunately I forgot most of IV). Nevertheless, Chris Reeve was the pure embodiement of Superman I saw in the comics and in the movies. It was like he was breaking the fourth wall and came to life. I believed that a man could fly. It made a profound and deep impression of how Superman should be, he used his brain instead of brawns. He is kind and helpful. He is a hope of overcoming our human shortcomings. That's why this image of Reeve's Superman portrayal made such a long lasting impression into the cultural consciousness of how Superman acts and behaves.

The poster actually looks good - the other photos, not so… :unsure

Not laziness, but if Synder is all about show and no substance like Watchmen, I would say that the Superman franchise died of greediness after Superman II.
I hope that pic is a fake.

Superman should look HEROIC, not like some murderhobo without a shotgun, wearing a bad wetsuit.

Everyone keeps saying that Superman is fine and doesn't need updating, but how many of you have been collecting the comics regularly? I am a huge fan...a freak about Superman, but the stories more often than not suck in my opinion. My initial reaction was negative based on his stupid looking hair, but it seems to be toned down more. These latest photos are better and at least they are trying something different with the character. My Superman is Chris Reeves, but I am honestly ready for something new.

And the comic book stories have what to do with the changes they've made for the film? Certain hero types have their time - Superman may not be the best selling title- but when some guy rushes into a fire to save a baby, a group of people try to regain control of an airplane or a young kid stops a mugger from attacking an old woman - his name is the first that comes up. And as corny as this may sound - i personally believe a certain level of respect is due to him and his traditional costume.

I would say the comics may be relevant judging by this costume and the re launch costume. And I would rather see a Superman that is in his late thirties or maybe a Kingdom Come or Red Son adaptation, but that doesn't mean I think this Superman would not save babies or rescue people from fires. Let's see what Cavill does with the material he's given.

Totally agree. Its best to see what's done with it than judge a movie based on the costume.

Dare I say the suit is actually growing on me a little. Don't get me wrong as nothing will beat the classic look, but I kinda like this fresh new take. Christopher Reeve was the superman I grew up with and I'll always see him as my favourit Superman. My fingers are crossed for this new movie but if it's crap we still have the classics.

I really like the lighter blue.

I read a post somewhere online that made reference to Synder "hearing" some of the costume outcry. Could we get a small change? (maybe CG colored?)

I do agree that it seems that Superman stole one of Spiderman's suits and slapped a weird looking S on there :p I am not sure how all this texture modernizing the suit(I know this is really just the rebooted comic suit also) and also they keep trying to give him armor ala Batman. Superman is NOT Batman....STOP trying to make him so. Snyder is a horrific director and I have no doubt with many casting choices that are questionable(Lawrence Fishbourne as Perry White, Amy Adams as Lois Lane and Russell Crowe as Jor-El...WTF), this movie along with a Goyer script(who has given us such gems as Jumper) will not be what they want it to be. I liked Reeve portrayal and grew up with that but I do not mind the Cain version or even Welling's take(do not even get me started on why he did not wear the suit in the Finale). Heck even Routh looked better IMO but I really have no hope that this movie will be good. Even my boys(who are 12 and 8) have seen the pics and when I asked them their opinion(not hearing my own), they said that's not Superman. My 63 yo FIL saw the pics of this new suit and said that's not Superman. I think that pretty much sums it up right there.....

No yellow "S" on the cape,
No red trunks,
Crappy "S" shield on his chest!

But, the Henry Cavill does "look" like a pumped up Superman.

I will be honest. The suit is such a departure from the original story history that I am in no hurry to go see this when it comes out. Because it means that they are probably willing to make other "compromises" in the history and story line of the Superman character. THAT has been the problem with the past franchises. I can always hope but its notr looking good to me right now.

Big flaming donkey testicles.
I'd like to say I'm above it, that a good story will trump a stupidly altered version of the suit, but all that will do for me is exacerbate how wrong the suit is. Superman is a national ****ing symbol. This is kinda like putting neon lights on the flag or changing the blue behind the stars to this dull ass blue color. Its just wrong, stupid and unnecessary.

I prefer THIS suit design to any of the hokey mods seen on these pages. Sorry if i offend, but they come across as camp, indulgent and slightly arrogant.

I'm really not sure what to make of this, I love the longer cape (this was also a choice I'm adding to my Returns suit when I get to the cape), the scaly design and the way the cape flows into the shoulders.
I don't like the belt (well, not belt, what is that odd thing sitting where the buckle should be?) and don't like (some of the) racing treads (although I like others).
I like the S, I think that looks great, but I don't see why they needed to change the classic design that much. It's different for difference sake, and not different for improvement, and I think they could have been a bit more true to the comic's original (the change for the Returns S was nice). Still, as I say, love the new S anyway.
Most importantly, that suit looks great on Cavill, who, I think some people need to be told, is NOT Reeve. Will we ever be free of the "but it doesn't look enough like Reeve's"... "It's too different... this movie will be rubbish"? There is a point to this film being a reboot, it's right that they have completely disragarded Reeve's very Earthly suit, and pushed out in a more alien direction.
Perhaps haters of this suit should go back and check the rest images and videos of the Superman Lives suit, and they'd realise how true to the comics Snyder and Nolan have actually been.

Does anyone know yet if the cape is fabric, like Cain's (best Supes yet in my opinion, with an awsome suit ^^), or leather-like, like Routh's (my favourite thing about Routh's costume)?

So experimenting with the design just for the fun of it and for the sake of discussion yields something indulgent and arrogant?

I think you're reading something into it that isn't there.

The arrogance comes from the whole, "i can do better" ethos.

Reeve's time has come and gone. I loved him, i grew up with him as MY Superman....but, i feel it's fantastic and daring to have such a departure from the same old, same old.

Mind you, didn't work for the Singer flick, did it? The Routh costume WAS seriously flawed. (is that arrogant of me?) And at the time, i DID enjoy some of the PS redos folks were doing.

In summary, this Cavill guy looks really good as Supes so far, the costume is different and a bit otherworldly, (he IS an alien..) and it's got a big, Eff-Off "S" symbol!
