Made Some Coins, And Now I've Made Some More...

AMB - I don't currently have anything new. New job has taken over my life, so I don't have a lot of time for new coin designs.

Poor spelling result of poor phone :)

I now have a few new things.

I'm going to need to make the Last Starfighter one a little smaller so I don't have the issues around the outermost edges. Open for ideas on anything new.

I recently bought some coin blanks and had the unfortunate discovery that the coins are plated...

I wasn't prepared for that, but decided to go with the flow. I etched off the outer layer, and was left with what looks like a copper coin. So I made these...

Instead of etching the outer layer off, I did a straight etch to see what dual colored coins would look like and this is what I got...

As always, looking for more ideas.

Two-tone is not a bad look...

Have you considered a Flynn's Arcade token?

Or perhaps something Firefly / Serenity related?

Also, the 'tracker' that Spider puts on Matt Damon in Elysium was round and etched with a design. Small-ish, though, IIRC.

Perhaps you'd like to make a non-canonical coin from one of your favorite sci-fi movies? Or alternate histories?

Dinotopia? Terra Nova? City of Ember? Game of Thrones? Blade Runner?

Or a favorite written work of fiction? Or a video game not listed here?

Maybe you should write a list of your favorite movies / books / games, and see if any of them mention fictional coins?

Mike J, I totally forgot about Flynn's arcade token, and I'm pretty sure that'll be my next coin.

Just about everything so far has been a non-cannonical appreciation for my favorite movies and games. Namco did have Pac-Man coins in the arcades way back, but I wasn't going to attempt a recreation of those. Turns out, I just like etching things, and I happen to have a lot of coins to do it with.

Thanks for the additional ideas.

Bad Wolf, I've been thinking about redoing that one. The outside of the cog just isn't right, not awful, but just not right. I do have some of that style of coin left, so I may make a few. Glad you like it.

There is a canonical coin for The City of Ember actually:

I have my own replicas of it that I had Shapeways 3D print - a plastic one (that didn't turn out too well) and a metal one (that looks great, but I don't actually have a picture of...)

Another idea: How about the medallion from Spaceballs?

These are really neat. Get a cheap gold electroplating kit off ebay for some variety. Dead easy to use - I gold plated my Pulp Fiction 'Ass' watch with the cheapest kit I could find and it came out perfectly.

I found this online...

A slight redraw and some adjustments, and no more Hollywood or Mouse references, and we have...

There's a bit of a difference in the size of the original and the one I made as well..

I wasn't looking to do an exact replica. There are a few things that prevent that from happening that are too boring to go into. Hope you enjoyed!

Here are some new coins that I made last night. Babylon 5…

And a co-worker wanted me to make one for the sniper in the family, we came up with this…

Just to show the shiny of the 2 toned coins (as I can't figure out how to take pictures of these correctly yet) I added this…

The Alien and Predator look great, lots of detail. Looks like you have definitely perfected your process. Would you care to go into more detail about it?

I like the shiny. To show shiny, you almost have to do a short video.

In my best Invader Zim yelling voice - "Brilliant!!"

I have a video on the Youtubes about sheet metal etching. There isn't a lot different between etching sheet metal and coin blanks. Is there something specific that you'd like to know?

Please, please tell me you are making the Babylon 5 tokens available for sale, they are fantastic !!!!!

Anything I make, or have made can be for sale. I can always make more. If you'd like some, I'd be happy to make more. Because I do everything by hand, changes can easily be made in credit value, font type, or artwork. If I had to make a die (as in most coin making), alterations are rather costly. So short answer is yes, I can make more for sale.

Would you mind if I shared the images of the Zocolo coin on a few Babylon FB pages? Maybe throw in a link to your Etsy page? Please let me know either way.
Also, I sent you a PM as well.

In your first post in this thread you stated "The technique is very different from standard sheet metal etching." I was just curious what the differences are.
