Made Some Coins, And Now I've Made Some More...

I thought of doing separate threads for obvious reasons, but I didn’t want to type that much. Over the last few weeks I’ve wanted to make some Hellraiser and Stargate coins. Since I’m an etcher of metal, I decided to etch the coins instead of stamping them. First – it’s cheaper to etch than to have a die made. And second – well I guess there is no second.

I actually had a rather difficult time trying to figure out how to do this correctly. The technique is very different from standard sheet metal etching. The coins have a lip and that’s what caused so many issues. When they were placed in a “normal” stencil, the lip caused the light to diffuse across the piece and made for a bad piece. I knew it wasn’t correct, but at this time, I didn’t know if I was ever going to get a correct piece done. Here’s what it looked like.

This was actually the 6th attempt at doing this. The 7th was more of a disaster, then I had an epiphany. I figured out how to get the image onto the piece correctly and here’s the 8th attempt.

There’s a little bit of the corner that didn’t make the full etching process. The pictures are inverted (which is a clue as to how I figured this out), but I was able to do a reasonable etch.

Since I had figured out how to do this (or so I thought), I got started on some Stargate coins. I prepped a batch of 3 only to find out that I did those wrong and had to once again figure out what went wrong and at what stage in the process. Stripped the film off those and started again. Then as if the might tentacle of Cthulu touched me, I figured out (again) what I did wrong. I went on to prepare these 8 coins for etching.

While 8 were made, after closer inspection, the Apophis coin had to be stripped and will be redone later. The remaining 7 were etched, and the remaining film stripped off. They came out a little green.

After a small soak in some fresh etchant, and a bit of a wire wheel, they all cleaned up rather nicely.

Aside from Apophis, I have a few other Stargate designs in mind. I have been toying with painting them, and the one I did paint, didn’t turn out well. That’s likely because I wasn’t enough of a geek in my childhood and left the Warhammer 40K miniature painting to my friends while I played Wizardry on my Apple IIe. That’s a whole different story :)

Let me know what you think. I’m open to ideas on painting, or coin designs.

I like them. They're cool the way they are. I'd have to see one painted to really know if that was going to be better.

GREAT work !!!!

Unpainted is best -- gives them more of an authenticity as being something that's real tender on goa'uld worlds :)

Really nice coins. But you say that you etch the coins because it is cheaper then having coin stamps made. But why not etch your own? I've included a picture of the stamps I made, the coins are lead because my hammer isn't heavy enough.

What are you using for coin blanks?I've tried to flatten coins but they got to hard to use.

The more I play around with them, I think I like the unpainted look.

I hadn't thought of it that way until you mentioned it. You're absolutely right!

I hadn't thought of etching my own die. I would still need a 60 ton press (according to the listing) to make a clean stamp, so I etch them. I actually do find etching to be a soothing thing. Some people yoga, I etch. The blanks I used can be found on Etsy or Ebay. They're conveniently called coin blanks.10 for $7, or 100 for $40

Re: Made Some Coins – Stargate & Hellraiser

Instead of doing what I should've done, and just put new resist on the cion, I tried to "fix" it. There were 2 plaves the resist didn't adhere correctly. One of them I did fix correctly, and the other is on the left side of the coin.

I will be adding more coins on throughout the next few weeks and as such I will be changing the title of the thread as it will be more than just Stargate and Hellraiser coins. I will be adding Star Wars, Harry Potter, and anything else that has a recognizable symbol. Again if you have a suggestion, I'm open to it.

This one didn't turn out quite as well as I would've liked. I was using s new resist, and had a few issues. Anyway, here's one of the new batch...

Thanks for all your comments.

a438980 - it seems like those coins are already available. The Game Of Thrones coin can easily be found for a few bucks on Ebay. I could do other designs from the show, like the sigils. I'll look into that a bit more.

The Schlitzie - That's a cool coin! With photoetching, you're working with a black and white image - no gray, so the depth on the wolf fur, and nose wouldn't come out like that. The depth would come from shades of gray that just can't be reproduced in an etch. If you could find a black and white wolf picture that you'd be happy with, then it could be done, but I'm sure that's not what you're looking for.

Solos - In hindsight I don't think the green was all that bad. I might make some more and keep them green. They could be shipwreck coins :)

I am looking into getting different color coin blanks. I don't know how long it will be before I find what I'm looking for, but it is on the list. Until then, I'll keep using what I've got. That reminds me, I have to post more coin pics!

I know you said you were working with coin blanks, how big are they? Quarter sized? Smaller?

I have an idea I may need to PM you about if you wouldn't mind helping me out. :)

They are slightly bigger than a half dollar. Half dollar - 30mm Blank Coin - 34mm. I'm always up for an etching project. Let me know what's on your mind.

I didn't see what metal these are made of. What are they?

There are Nickel Silver which unfortunately contains no silver. It's silver in color but contains 60% copper, 20% nickel, and 20% zinc.

Very cool stuff! This got me interested in learning and giving it a shot at etching coins.
Have you new coins to show?
