Mad Max MFP Uniform/Acessories Thread

I am diggin this thread. nice research and pic's. not sure anyone answered, but you had posted a question about the stitching at the bottom of the jacket, as your picture show's these jacket's had "dual" flap's with button's (you can see the button's at the corner's) to hold them open, the weird stitching is where the outer jacket "flap" would fold over flat to the jacket in the buttoned position. the same with the other side. Thanks so much for this tip! I thought the stitching was just a weird jacket production detail that existed as a cost measure of some sort, but it looks like it has a cool, practical purpose! Anyways, one of the reasons I posted about it in the first place was becuase I hadn’t seen any of the replicas with the detail, and with the details I know about the jackets now, I’m surprised that truly accurate replicas haven’t been made. Here’s a couple pics I found of Roop wearing the jacket open:

Anyways, thanks for reading the thread, I’m still looking for more to cover!

I'm "geussing" here..... but back in ye' olden days these jacket's would have been a thicker leather hence the stitching's you see to help with the folding. with the price of leather jacket's going up I would think they 'deleted" certain detail's and went with thinner leather etc. over the year's. I own a brown leather jacket with a very similar double breasted design and they actually have added more "snaps" to hold it open because the leather is so thin.

The jackets in the movie were definitely on the thin side (unlined vinyl), and that helps explain the snaps required to hold it open. However, Goose’s jacket is patterned identically (minus the shoulder and elbow pad stitching), and it’s definetly made of a thicker leather. However, the reason for keeping the small details on such cheap jackets is beyond me. I wonder, what other cool features are on the vinyl ones?

I haven’t. To be honest you don’t want that because they are week and fail easily.
Since I’m looking for some, would you happen to know of any accurate badges available? They don’t have to have the horizontal pin, since you’ve already explained why.

I’m loving this thread! Looking forward to see what tiny details you discover. I have a feeling that a new super accurate MFP jacket will emerge from your hard work.

Already checked these out, but thanks for making me double check that second link to confirm the lack of stock.

Thanks Bondo, having an accurate jacket available is something I would definitely appreciate. I guess the rest of the Mad Max costuming community would also like a nice jacket, since Southbeach lacks accuracy for the price, Abbyshot no longer makes theirs (inaccurate anyways) and the Japanese ones are really expensive and still not perfect. I’m hoping to nail down every stitch and seam and, if possible, find an original/evidence of an original vinyl jacket in order to get a pattern and material sourced so that some clothiers could make replicas available.

Ok, so first, a little bit of info: the pants in the film were most likely vinyl, and due to their simplicity/lower end material or both, they tended to split around the knee. According to a source I found, you can see the split when Roop is standing on top of the bunker and when Max fights with Johnny(visible in post #32). There’s also a scene where you can see that Charlie’s pants have been repaired around the same area. Eitherways, theses are simple, tight fitting pants, and have no pockets on the back, and only one pocket (the bound pocket) on the front right. On the back, there is a v-seam (which is visible in post #3) and the bound pocket is visible in post #5 and in post #29. For something other than the pants, I have this nice image of Max’s holster that really shows the x-stitching on the back:

Another thing about Charlie is that he wears a holster, but on his right:

Also, what’s he wearing around his neck? It’s been a while since I’ve seen the movie, but does anyone remember what it is? Someone I know thought it was part of the saucepan he “copped in the throat”, but I posted a photo of that earlier and it doesn’t look like it.

Another question I have is about the MFP issue helmets, since Charlie’s appears silver in the hospital scene. Would that mean that Max’s helmet (which I covered in post #20) is also silver? It would make sense, especially if one considers that Goose’s helmet is silver.

Funny thing I just realized, if one looks at photos of almost everyone on the MFP, it is apparent that the jackets everyone are wearing are a size too small. I’m not sure how people would feel about that if they wanted an accurate replica, as the jacket and its sleeves would have to be shorter to provide an accurate look.

gee wiz bro.... now I wanna go buy this series in 4k LOL  just waiting on my damn tax return....
There’s actually a new transfer on the original film that’s going to be released physically this year. Here’s a comparison of the old HD transfer I’ve been using for screenshots, and the new 4K transfer coming down the line (both screenshots are 1080p).

I get super excited thinking about all the reference shots I could get for this thread just thinking about it!
Unfortunately, there isn’t any news regarding releases of Mad Max 2 and Thunderdome, so we’ll have to wait and see. I would like to mention that Fury Road was shot in 2012 at 2.2K, and the digital intermediate (where all the VFX/Color Grading is composited) that was released gets to around 2K. This being said, Fury Road in 4K is really just an upscale from the 2K intermediate, but the HDR and Dolby Atmos more than certainly make up for it. Mabye one day, George M. will take the time to get a proper upscale from the native 2.2K resolution (although it would be expensive to construct a new intermediate).

Now I know this isn’t related to the thread, but while looking at the cover for one of the Mad Max releases, I noticed something very, very wrong:

How does he have the shoulder pad from Mad Max 2? Well, it turns out that Max here is comprised of three different photos:

It’s strange how details like this become so noticeable after one glosses over reference photos for hours on end.

If anyone wants to try out a Scuttle costume, make sure to put a band-aid over your right eyebrow (and grow a thin but long mustache):

It’s great. I love having people stop by, it helps break the monotony and keep me from going MAD talking to myself.
Back to the thread here, it’s slowly gaining popularity among the Mad Max Costuming Community, and Madmaxmovies.com forum member Morrisminor was so impressed with my reasearch (and a couple photos I posted that he somehow had never seen before) that he posted about it on his blog, Futuro Finale 2088 AD, which has years of excellent behind the scenes posts containing valuable reference photos. Here’s the link if you want to check it out: Futuro Finale 2088AD: MFP Uniform
