Wow...I never thought a glass box would be such a saga.

I think the last post I did on this was....and now I "just" have to finish the glass which was end of last summer.

I spent a month visiting local glass shops..and then another 2 calling all the way from montreal to texas trying to find a supplier that could do it.

Dont get me wrong...plenty of people said they could...but when I saw some samples it was a bit disheartening. (Huge glue bubbles, chipped joinery, and overall not quite the level of workmanship I was hoping for to finish this thing off)

I finally found a crystal craftsman early october...giving him the instructions "take the time you need to get it done right".

LOL...I got a call and picked the box up on tuesday...ie...more than 3 months later. I guess he took the "take the time you need" a bit literally.

I wish he would have taken my dimensional drawing that literally. It was made larger than I requested. When asked he said he used my drawing as a "guide"

When asked about the jig that I had given him to make sure that it fit right...he said he had to sand/file the jig to make the glass fit into it.

Soooo....the glass looks really really good...but it is big...and I had to re-machine the base slot in the aluminum in an effort to salvage things.

All you can do is laugh...

Please find enclosed a couple pics of the completed unit....

Wow... :love

It looks almost like it's the screen-used version (aside from a few parts that need to be rotated a few degrees). I'm pretty sure this is the best arc reactor project we've seen on the RPF (y)thumbsup:thumbsup

Hello all,

As far as kits go...

At the moment I am just trying to finish this project off. The RT has sat unfinished for over a year now and the light at the end of the tunnel is in sight. Actually, the light, the plaque, and the glass enclosure are in sight so things are looking up. Displaying a cardboard box full of loose parts just doesnt have the same "wow" effect in most circles.

When my RT and display case are finished up I will be more than happy to look into what it will take to do some part runs.

Take care

Jason

As mentioned way back when, I said I would look into what it would take to get a RT kit off the ground.

If you read my last post you can see that I had some time while waiting for the glass to do this.

I submitted my drawings for quoting to a number of shops that i knew could handle any type of volume, and would produce parts that I would be happy to send out the door.

Unfortunately...

I was getting numbers in that were well over a 1K for some of the major components to be machined. These quotes were for a run of 30, were in aluminum, and did not include a number of the smaller "fiddly" pieces or plastic components.

I redrew the parts...trying to make them simpler...and resubmitted the drawings. I was still at the 1K mark...and as mentioned more parts would need to be quoted on to account for a complete RT.

The above is only speaking about the RT itself...not the base, glass, or electronics.

It got to a point where the drawings were deviating so far from the original build in an effort to bring the price down that shapes were wrong, or out of scale...which I think really defeats the whole point of it all.

Based on the number of emails that I have received I realize that many ironman fans would like a kit.

From my findings to date I am not confident that it can be done at the level that I would like without blowing the bank considerably...(If we are comparing apples to apples and not changing things to plastic or molded/cast parts)

I spent the last couple of days cleaning up my drawing...renaming "that shiny part" and "that other more shiny part" with names that made a bit more sense...

I will be adding a link to it shortly...just have to figure out where to put it.

Hopefully everyone interested finds the work helpful.

ONE GIGANTIC NOTE:

When I started this project it was waaaay back when ironman 1 came out..and there wasnt a ton of info as far as dimensions. My drawings, and RT have an overall outer diameter of 3.5". I was too far along to make the change to 3" when I found new information.

Any one who wants to use the drawings please keep that in mind.

Have a great weekend.

Jason

Here is the link for the file.

There are a bunch of free cad viewers on the net that might be a means for some to open, manipulate, print the file.

It is a 2d file since most of the cutting/toolpaths were profiles with secondary machining (holes, threads, etc) coming in after the fact.
