Luke TFA Behind the Scenes Lightsaber Community Build Thread

Re: Anakin Starkiller Luke TFA Lightsaber Build Thread

glad to know you can achieve that dull look just with paint! i think i may actually give it a try
Going off what said earlier, as a prop builder, they keep it simple for time purposes. I would imagine they don't have alot of time dedicated to waiting for natural weathering or chemical weathering. I have no idea really because I'm not a real prop builder. But I do know, I can easily weather anything in no time because I know how to do it. Drybrushing does wonders! I love the tamiya weathering kits. You should look into them, truth be told, they do alot of the work

When it comes to Star Wars, ANH especially, they didn't weather anything. The budget was so small for what the wanted to do that pretty much all the props were made from antiques, and military and airline scrap. Most of it looked weathered from the start. Obviously, Lucas wanted a used universe, so that's probably what helped them decide on where to spend some money.

Re: Anakin Starkiller Luke TFA Lightsaber Build Thread

The reason I weathered my tfa luke so much was, it appears to just be a continuation of the hero but 30 or 40 years later. So naturally the copper would darken as well as the grip section and emitter. ANH is my main prop building focus so I'm weathering all. E11, DL44, r2d2 and stormtrooper helmet. I will share soon.

Upon further review I have decided I had way too much weathering detail around the control box so I rubbed it down and re shot the clear coat over it. I was very happy with the rest so I left that part of it alone.

I think I like this better. Less steam punk if you will.

Ok people, I have been patiently waiting to see your builds but no luck. Surely there are plenty of these just waiting for you to work on. Lol
Seriously I would love to see some more. Who's next??? Halliwax maybe, push push.

first i am a little confused, i don't know if the original poster, Bartersnar Bartersnar meant for this to be a thread for all builds or just his.

so i don't want to high jack his personal thread.

if this is the master thread for all complete TFA luke's then i'll post mine up.

the fact is, i have contacted my friend who is a machinist, and he's willing to machine the 1.5mm off to make the screen used one better. he lives only 2-3 miles away, i don't have a vehicle right now but that doesn't stop me as i cycle daily, just we have had none stop rain..

once i get the control box milled, it will be put together... seriously don't know which way i'm going to go. i'm kinda afraid of oven clean, i don't want it to look as dark as my V2.

if bartnersnar can report back on how he wants this thread to go it would be great. if it is his personal thread in sorry for derailing it, though if it wasn't for him i wouldn't be going in the directions i am so i thank him

Hey everyone, now that Anakin Starkillers run of Luke TFA sabers are being shipped, I figured a build thread was in order.
I won't be able to actually start mine till the weekend so unfortunately that gives this thread a dull start haha. Here it is anyway, feel free to post your works in progress!View attachment 641263

I think you're alright bud

Yeah, easy to loose touch with posting. It did say at the end of the first post to feel free sharing wip photos, however, I think you may be correct. Not sure if this was meant to be a group build post. I just went with it seeing how others posted. I hope I didn't high jack as well.

Re: Anakin Starkiller Luke TFA Lightsaber Build Thread

Oh no this isn't a personal thread haha thanks for asking though.
This is a build thread for everyone who wants to post their BTS builds. I'll update the title to make sure.
Please feel free to post to your hearts content!

I just got my control box in so I'll be posting with my progress too! :)

Re: Anakin Starkiller Luke TFA Lightsaber Build Thread

Cool, I'm glad we didn't high jack your thread. Thanks for starting one.

Re: Anakin Starkiller Luke TFA Lightsaber Build Thread

Of course! No worries.
I figured since there's only around 30-40 of us who were on the run, we might as well have a thread!

have you tried using a sanding sponge to dull it down yet. All it really does is knock some of the sheen off and if you don't like it, you can get it back simply by polishing it with a soft cloth. I dulled mine that way and left it outside for 2 days. Then I shoot a clear coat over it. If I choose, I can still get it back to the same look it came to me in. Not sure if chemical or oven cleaner would allow me to shine it up again.

Re: Anakin Starkiller Luke TFA Lightsaber Build Thread

thanks everyone, on another forum i visit i just got busted for high jacking. sometimes i dont think and start babbling, and then start asking questions not related to the project. i just wanted to double check and make sure ;)

i have been working so much, I've been tackling little projects i have had. finishing up my star destroyer capacitor tomorrow night.. tonight i finished making extensions for my display case. Mr. Fusion is too tall...

as for dulling, i usually use warm soapy water, and then hit it with 4000grit automotive sand paper. i MAY just hit it with oven clean lightly and then hit it with 4000grit

Where did you get that skywalker map?
Your v2 looks great. I'm working on the tfa rey as well. Just got some parts from roy.

the skywalker map i got from Zenix, he made different version of it when the VD came out. on screen it changes, from being painted with circles and lights, to the raw metal look.

the one in the pervious picture is his resin version, below is his metal cast and leather bag

Well since this is a community thread... I've posted this elsewhere but here is mine. I took an approach away from the hero, and went with a V2 as seen in Battlefront.

I've got a logo-less clamp from Roman on the way-- I might use it on here instead of what's currently on it. (That's a Roman repro clamp with Roy's clamp card).
