Lucas pledges half of wealth the charity

Have any of them actually given the money they are pledging ?
It's all nice and generous everything to say have it when i'm dead but it's surely better to put that money to work for these charities now ?
I assume any money they are pledging is from their personal wealth and not any companies they own.

I'd like to see him buy up a significant percentage of the Amazon (or similar) rain forest, plus fund an entity to police it, to protect if from deforestation.

Probably unrealistic... But one could hope...

I know the Irwins have donated millions around here to museums, charities etc..

As have all the others on the list i am sure and thats very good of them.
My question though is if these people feel they can afford to give away this money they are pledging after they die why not put it to work sooner rather than later ?

The pledge is to give it away during your lifetime, or after your death. What does it matter? He is giving away roughly $2,000,000,000. That is more money than I could ever spend in a lifetime. Why would people poo poo this?

Not poo pooing it i'm just saying it's surely better to give the money now rather than say i'll give the money later when i'm dead ?
It just seems strange to say well i think this is a great cause and this money can do an awful lot of good, i'd like to help and i have the money to spare thats just sitting in a bank that i'll never ever use but you know what i'd like to hold onto it until i'm dead even though the money could be put to work now and doing good things rather than in 20,30,40 years or whatever time.

I can appreciate this but with that much money, it will continue to gain interest therefore more money for charity in the end.

A few years ago Gates came to San Diego to cut the ribbon on some charity building thing that he had put up the dough for, it was in the millions and you would think it was the second coming the way the city and news media made it out to be.

The next day in the paper, a writer pointed out that compared to his total worth (personally) it was the equivalent of an average American contributing a nickel.

Thanks for the nickel Bill.

I just wish they could make the contribution without the giant ego stroke that goes with it.

That sort of takes the wind out of it for me.

If I see one more building, park, or road with Helen Copley, Joan Croc or Stephen and Mary Birch's names on it here in town, I think my head is going to explode.

They should rename Seattle, Gatestown or Allenville. How about San FranLucas.

Remember there are wealthy that do not make public their charity.
I don't care if one makes it public or not, but never assume the "rich" are just sitting on all their moneys laughing at everyone else. Or how they do work of other nature not necessarily about giving money. I have been impressed with the quiet works of various people over the years. Some things are not as they seem externally and some like to keep what they do private.

So the thousands and thousands of dollars I've wasted on Star Wars crap is actually gonna go, in small part, to a good cause?

Pat yourselves on the backs, lads. We're making the world a better place.
