LOTR UC knock-offs - Final summary

Re: LOTR United Cutlery knock-offs?

You know Kenny - that very project/idea is what got me looking in the first place! But 25-30 cutofff wheels doesn't sound to appealing!

Well, I did use the thin wheels. You can get larger wheels that would work better. I used what I already had so it really didn't cost me anything other than the sword and time!

Re: LOTR United Cutlery knock-offs?

No need for a cutoff wheel - dip it in liquid nitrogen and then smack it on the floor...and there you have it Shards of Narsil!

:lol

Hey you know, that is a great idea! I have a whole vat of liquid nitrogen behind my shop that I keep for just such an occasion!!:lol

Re: LOTR United Cutlery knock-offs?

The reason the UC shards are so expensive is because it was a limited edition item, and sold out years ago. The only thing that irritates me about it is that all the shards are permanently attatched to the plaque, so if you wanted to display your shards like you see in the movie you basically would need to destroy it. If you find a good place to get a knock-off Anduril for this let us know.

Re: LOTR United Cutlery knock-offs?

Here you go Rob!

This is the first cut I made. Oh, and I checked the other board where I first posted this and it was around 35 disks I used. There are 2 different dates in the pics. That's because I didn't reset the date after changing the batteries! :)
On to the pics!

That came out fantastic! Your cuts looks spot on!

If I do it, I may do just the hilt portion. I know that defeats the concept of shards (plural), but it's the broken hilt I'm most drawn to. And just doing that, I may be able to do it with only 25 wheels! ;)

Re: LOTR United Cutlery knock-offs?

Yeah, it is the hilt I like the best also. But, I figured since I had the sword already mangled I would do it all! Believe me, I thought about stopping several times while doing this. It does try your patience. For me it was the breaking of all those wheels and having to change them.:lol

But I am glad I finished it!:)

Re: LOTR United Cutlery knock-offs?

Kenny, do you recall how long it took to do just the hilt?

And how many band-aids did you go through!? ;)

Re: LOTR United Cutlery knock-offs?

I did one of these as well - and aside from all the cutoff wheels - the metal dust it produces was a pain in itself! I had to take a shower after each cutting session, LOL.

Re: LOTR United Cutlery knock-offs?

Yeah, it was a little dusty. I used a respirator dut that didn't do a thing for the rest of me!:lol

Rob, I had cut, filed and cleaned uo in less than an hour! Just the hilt that is!:)

Re: LOTR United Cutlery knock-offs?

Very interesting discussions as I was looking for the UC swords but were out of my range. Where do you guys score these? Can you post or PM me links? Evil bay?
Cheers and thanks

Re: LOTR United Cutlery knock-offs?

I got most of my knock-off swords from a local vendor here in PC that has a little shop at the flea market of all places!!

Yeah Damnit, he sold me my first sword which was the Glamdring for $20. I was hooked from then on!!:lol

Good god - twenty bucks with no shipping! How can you beat that!?

I'm getting hooked too... Now thinking of grabbing a Strider!

Hoping for a package on the door step today. We'll see.

Re: LOTR United Cutlery knock-offs?

be careful buying cheapo swords on ebay - they can make them look WAY better than they are... a guy bought a cheap narsil on ebay and had it sent to me to cut up and send to him. When it showed up, the blade was crooked, and the hilt pieces were loose and litterally wobbled around. However, once I cut it up and it was just for display purposes, it worked just fine. But I would steer clear of the super cheapos for any other purpose...

Re: LOTR United Cutlery knock-offs?

I bought 2 swords from ebay and I only recieved one and it was not what was pictured. I complained and they pointed out the fine print which read "Item pictured may differ from shipped product."
When I say fine print, I mean fine print. I could have looked at the ebay add a thousand times and never seen it!!

So yes, be careful with ebay swords!!!
