Looking for a UK custom poster frame seller

Hi,
I hope this is the right section ?, apologies if it isnt.. I have been looking for an affordable poster framing company here in the UK who arnt too expensive as I have a rare First Blood Pakastani movie poster that I need framing. Any help would be great, thanks. :)

The size is 39" x 28.5"

Hi

As you are looking for an afforadable frame it will need to be rerady made rather than custom. A few places I know of that do a range of reasonable frames are Wilkinsons, Hobbycraft and The Range. All worth checking if you have one close. Other that that its trying to find someone close who makes their own frames as once you have the tools the cost of making your own frames is a lot cheaper than in frame shops.

Hi pal,
I already got some of the large plastic clip frames from Wilkinsons and The range before, but unfortunately they dont have this funny size. What I would like is that black plastic surround that can be cut and mitired to fit, which just slips overthe edges. Also as the poster is 28 years old and is folded, Im thinking I will need to use spray mount the poster to the back of the frame, its a one shot deal, so any info would be great. Do you know how much a custom frame would cost? as the poster on its own is worth in excess of £100. :)

As these larger frames are plastic, I suppose I could cut the perspex to fit, but then I would have to realine the clips so they are uniformed all the way around. As I havnt got many tools for the job, if I were to use a metal rule and a sharp stanley knife to cut the perspex, do you think I could get away with that?
 
A metal rule and sharp knife should work for cutting the perspex.

If you have a frame shop near you it would be worh asking for a quote as I my local one is always very helpful and also a good place to get the materials to do my own. They may even cut the perspex for you.

I think it would be better to sandwich the poster between the backing board and the perspex rather than gluing it as once done you can't chnage your mind and it would also effect the value of the poster.

Thanks for the info pal...your right, although it would look better to do spray mount it to the back board, if I mess it up (because of the folds and due to the VERY thin paper), it would be a gut wrenching if I made a mistake! For the cost of the materials, I will give it a go, and at the end of the day, I can like you say pad it out. My only concern is the folds, and Im wondering if i should back fold them all first to try and get an even finish, the only problem is as the paper is fragile, I dont want to risk breaking the paper in the weak spots. :wacko

If you really value the poster, then get it mounted and framed by a company such as artrepublic.
I've had original artwork mounted and framed by them, and they have an extensive selection of mounts, frames and if you want to protect the poster from sunlight, UV glass.
They're not the cheapest, but they are very helpful and their work is superb.
 
as a collector of rare poster DON'T spray mount this poster. I don't know how rare this particular poster is or it's worth as it's not in my field of movie but if you do spray mount it you'll render it pretty worthless to a collector.my advice is to get it linen backed. That will remove any creases and the process if done properly can be reversed. There are various places in the UK that do this. A simple google search will find them or contact a poster dealer. I would also go with a UV protective Perspex or glass as uv will fade the poster. Clip frames are good. do a search and you'll find them.

IKEA, sell poster frames, last i checked they were £20 - with a choice of colours, black. blue, white - possibly red.

To have custom framed doesn't cost that much, i had a DK Joker poster framed last year at my local framers for £60 - Any local framer should be able to do this for you and be able to mount the thing without damaging the original condition of the poster itself.

If you DIY - then all you need to do is place the poster into the frame - once the backing board is on it will sandwich the poster right in there and keep it in place - no sticky things required!!!
 
If this poster has any value do not spray mount it to anything or sandwich the poster against the glass. If moisture gets into the frame the poster may become stuck to it, risking damage and effecting future value.
I would try to find a local framer, and ask for conservation mounting, this will allow any framing to be reversed at a later stage without damage to the poster.
I have used artrepubic to frame a couple of Banksy prints, they are not cheep!

Is linen backing the same as dry mounting? I have always had the posters and prints I have dry mounted on the advice of a picture framing shop owner I know. It gets rid of all creases and makes the print pretty sturdy in the frame.

GOD no ..never dry mount anything unless it's worthless. it is a permanent thing. I was a frame shop manager for several years and saw many people do stupid things like that. I need to make a TO DO and NOT to do list for everyone.

Dry mounting is a great thing , but never meant for anything that you intend on saving for investment etc.

one quickie is never have anything framed touch the glass and if you really like your piece , never use store bought glass for it ( buy the UV protected)

and a quickie def. of linen mounting

Linen Backing is a conservation method used to mount and preserve vintage posters so they can be displayed or framed without compromising value. Damaged posters are stabilized through linen backing and restoration to protect the poster from further damage. Yeah it is a big thing. I have talked people out of dry mounting all kinds of things. It's a great process for displays ( information items) and the like , but fo collectibles not so much.

I remember when I was at Michael's once , they had a lawsuit at another store where a framing employee dry mounted someone's baby ultrasound. the problem was the parents has lost the child and didn't want thier only image of their baby dry mounted. That was a huge pay out.
I have framed everything from pieces of the Pentagon from the 9/11 attacks to screen used everything , BUT I always try to talk people into a sense of reason.
 
As I mentioned earlier, which apparently went unnoticed, what does this subject have to do with GENERAL MODELING????
 
Mods, maybe you can delete this thread, as it seems that some (who are clearly PERFECT) cant let this issue go....tut. ;-)
