Suggestion Location in MP threads

Any chance you could make it manditory to have your location set when posting a FS/Wanted thread in the MP?

Especially for people looking for services and commisssions as it's a bit of a bother quoting someone $100 for a job and then finding out he lives in Guam.

Same goes for shipping, nothing worse than seeing something you're after, pm'ing them and a day or so later finding out that shipping is a fortune or they don't ship outside of their own country.

I mean it takes literally 5 seconds and just a country would do.:thumbsup

I agree i'd like to see it but some people are just lazy i often see posts like.blaster FS 250 plus shipping.

Oooooh Kayyyyyyyyy 250 ? martian pesos ?
Sure i know full well it's likely to be dollars but it is an international forum how much effort is it to add a $.

Plus i dunno how many threads i read which take no notice at all of the already supposedly manadatory rules for posting there which are never seemingly enforced.

I seen this in numerous FS threads, but it is understandable. The way I look at it is the Marketplace has a high influx of new items or "eaglewood" items. Sometimes items that were recently posted are already on page 2 after a hour or so. The mods can only do so much and it takes time out of their day going item to item making sure the member is obeying the rules. It is time consuming and may get annoying after awhile.

I can see why this was never included in the rules because some members already have their location displayed under their avatar. Great suggestion, but I doubt members would put it in their description. If they cant include a picture, I doubt they will include a location everytime.

Maybe we can adopt a craigslist style of selling where it makes you fill in description title price and location

I too think this is a great suggestion, but I can just imagine the sellers who would balk at it... you know who you are. We are lucky if we can get people to add prices as they are supposed to...

I would really like to see the entire concept of the Marketplace overhauled at some point to be more of what it truly is, a market place. As with so many things, the current limitation is the software itself which doesn't really support selling items as it should. We are investigating a couple of solutions but I won't kid you, it won't be ANY time soon.

Is there a post generator or post template mod built for this software ?

I've seen this on other forums it's a useful mod, basically the operator just fills in details on pre-existing templates, presses post and it posts the thread.

This way all threads are in a uniform format.

Not natively, but via a third party, yes. That is exactly the kind of thing I would like to see for the Marketplace as it would make listings more uniform and make poster follow the established guidelines.

Good god, let's leave the place alone. There's always going to be someone crying for something to be added to or done with the Marketplace.

3rd party nonsense and mandatory this and that...damn, already.

I wish there was an ******* filter for the Marketplace sometimes but understand we can't always get what we want.

Just sayin'

no. not really... the "main Marketplace" would be for US sales (which is what the majority of the sales in the JY are anyway) and thenthe sub forum would be for "NON us sales" which would include everyone else....
i mean, lets be realistic... ive never seen a JY post selling something in pesos or rubles, or some other weird currency.... its all either USD, pound, or euro...

Yes but if you read the OP's post his issue is with huge shipping costs and sellers not shipping outside of their country and thus the issue with the sellers country not listed anywhere.
As most people just state a price + shipping, and when you contact them you find out they're on the other side of the planet and shipping isn't economical for the purchase.
The issue isn't with what currency the price is listed as.

Shipping from New Zealand isn't going to be any cheaper than shipping from the US for him is it.

That's the best way to have twice the amount of FS posts and one more sub-forum to read through without any other benefits.

I mean, if I want to buy something, I'll have to skim through an US and a non-US Junkyard? Great, yet another forum to read through. If I'm shopping for something, I'll look through all threads and want to buy what catches my eye. If I find out the item is in the US (which, admittedly, most items are), I'll have to consider shipping. Therefore, it would be best if I could simply look at the profile of the seller and see where he's located. I think making this mandatory would be a good start.

And if I'm selling something, I want to offer it to everyone, meaning I'll have to post it in the US and non-US Junkyard. Why should I only post it in the non-US Junkyard and miss out on possible US customers if I'm located in Europe? I could just as well not tell that I'm from Europe, add a fixed shipping price to my sale price and post it in the US Junkyard. Or better yet, simply make a fixed price and post it in both Junkyards.

And, frankly, I've never seen anyone selling anything here in a currency other than USD or, maybe on occasion, in EUR or GBP, which shouldn't be that much of a hassle since you can simply have your USD converted to the respective currency in Paypal for next to nothing.

Therefore:
Separate Junkyards: bad idea!
Mandatory location in profile: good idea!

Cheers!

Just so you guys aren't wasting your time, we aren't going to make a separate Junkyard for out of country sales. I understand the argument, but a separate forum is not the solution.

In regard to mandatory inclusion of country of origin, we are not opposed to it, but it is hard enough for us just to get sellers to post a price (which is mandatory) much less their country. If we had an automated way of doing this, we would likely do it, but there is not one to the best of my knowledge.

I already suggested one a post generator with preset format.

Type of post: FA/FS/NP etc
Item:
Item Location:
Price:
Description:

Something like that.

Not hard at all. 1st time they improperly post, their post is deleted, and the offender gets a one month suspension from the Junkyard. Do it again, suspend them for 6 months. 3rd time, banned from the Junkyard. It's not hard to follow the rules when you know the consequences. If nothing punitive is done, why follow the guidelines?

Rule with an iron fist. :)

No argument that polices are easy to write up and talk about... but in 6 months we will get a rant thread about how we are applying the rules unfairly because we didn't read every single junkyard thread to ensure the country was put in... :lol
