before the large model was built for the first ST movie, there was another model made. Maybe for a new TV show or something. It looked very similar to the final movie model.
Someone here had poste da link to a page with that model a while back. Anybody have that link?

By the way, that model is in NYC's Planet Hollywood restaurant. I could try for some detail shots if you need them.

I work right across the street from the restaurant.

Unfortunately those pics show the model after it was retro-detailed to more closely match the TMP model. (Which was a shame.) Originally it was much more of a hybrid of the TOS version. Remember the early teaser movie poster of TMP with the McQuarrie painting of an movie-esque enterprise still with the "nipple" under the saucer? Like that.

I'll see if I can find pics of that...

There was that one and it did look just like the final movie model except the nacelles. But I don't think this was the one built for Phase II. The Phase II model, built by Don Loos, looked like a true hybrid of the TOS model and the movie model with a primary hull much more like the TOS model. IIRC it was about 6 feet long, making it bigger than the model pictured here. I have an old Fanzine with (crappy) B&W pics of it. The best photos I've seen were published in a book about the lost series. Those used to be posted online somewhere, but I don't have the link handy. . .

More photos of the Brick Price model can be seen here:

From what I understand the case is what I stated above (whether or not the one pictured is the right model), that it was retrofitted to look more like the TMP model and still exists.

Some of those photos were published in a Trek book that covered the scripts and making of the pre-TMP/aborted TV series. And there are some photos of it in the Brick Price book that is featured over at star-art's site.

I think the jist of it goes like this - New TV series begin development over at Paramount in '75 or '76. Don Loos begins working on model of ship based on Matt Jefferies' redesign. That incarnation is abandoned when it is desided to make Trek into a feature ('77/'78). Matt Jefferies has also left the project by then. Richard Taylor and Andy Probert begin a new redesign where the Don Loos model left off. Similar in shape but with different details. The 100" refit Enterprise also went through some revisions during its construction - notably the bridge cap and the cap on the underside of the saucer. I've seen shots of the top of the saucer and at some point, they changed out the bridge from one that greatly resembled the teardrop shape of the TOS Enterprise bridge to the one we know now. I have comparison drawings somewhere that show the refit and the TOS version and you can see the differences since they were done during the design/construction phase and not after the fact like the blueprint set that was commercially available.

At least that's what I've been able to piece together.

wow that phase II E is butt ugly. Glad they continued to develop the design to where it ended up. The TMP E is the best looking version of all the E's, imho
