Link; the Hero of Time (Fan Design) - UPDATE P.2

I'm portraying Link from The Legend of Zelda in an upcoming web-series, with a bit of a twist. I'm depicting the Hero of Time version, but at age thirty. This is a battle-hardened swordsman who has seen countless adventures. The first step was to find or make a costume design that looked true to the character, yet was more mature and utilitarian. After doing some of my own designs that I wasn't incredibly thrilled with, I turned to the internet and found this one by Aaron Morse:

Though that version is based on Twilight Princess, I love it. I e-mailed him about using it as the inspiration for the costume and he kindly gave me his blessing. I've decided to make some minor changes to the gloves, belts, and shield, to make them more in line with the Hero of Time version. Next was to find a visual aid that captured Link's face at the age I want to portray. Browsing DeviantArt I found this by the user Sage of Winds:

Perfect!

So between these two designs, I have the inspiration for my build. I've begun work on the Hylian Shield, using EVA foam. First I built a 2d template, which I'll share in the attachments. The Ocarina of Time decals were from one found in Google images. The design based on Aaron's artwork was done by myself in Photoshop before I decided to go with the classic decals.

My shield going to be four layers of EVA foam (two for the base, two for the framing, and is to be detailed with craft foam sheets and 6mm foam for the decals and extra parts of the frame itself. It's mostly built at this point, and while I haven't weighed it I can tell you it's incredibly light. Here it is so far.

Next up I need to cut out the front frame, and glue it in place. I've left part of the top open so I can rivet on the belt straps for the back, and once that's done all the edges will be completely glued and sealed. I was thinking of using some bondo to seal the edges, as the texture of my EVA foam made it difficult to get a completely clean bond. The whole thing will be sealed with mod-podge, and then painted and weathered.

More to come soon! My goal is to finish the shield this week (though painting may have to wait til next week) and get started on the clothing next week. I've already got most of my fabrics, so with some good luck this will be a quick build!

Did a lot of work on the shield in the last day. I attached the belts, which went well enough (I hope the rivets are strong, now that it's sealed shut!) I also took a jigsaw to the edges to improve symmetry. I'm not really happy with the very top, which looks crooked. I'm hoping I can correct that by adding a bit more foam, sealing, etc. before I start adding bondo to do the final seal of the sides.

The belts themselves are scrap pieces I've had forever. I considered waiting to have matching belts but I'm in a bit of a hurry and I'm okay with the look as it makes the shield look older and such.

I added some tally marks to the back of the shield. They represent boss fights and sub-bosses. ;) A little detail I got from one of the shields in the game Morrowind.

I also started painting the shield using techniques I picked up from DaFrontlineTrooper on YouTube. I've added the royal crest (which is yet to be sealed and painted.)

Lots more details need to be added, but it's getting there! Once it's painted it'll be sealed, weathered, and all that good stuff.

NICE! I love alternate version characters like this. That pic reminds me of Link meets Big Boss.
I'm actually planning out a Viking Berserker version of Link myself, so I can't wait to see what you do.

Very cool! It's going to look awesome when finished!

I am curious, how did you get the curve in the shield?

That was sort of a "happy accident" really. What I did was use a heat gun repeatedly on the front. The foam naturally warps forward when you do that. Right now it tries to sit more or less flat, but when holding the shield you can pull the belt handle a bit to help it curve.

At this time I'm doing the bondo and mod-podge work, so I have the leather belts tied together to maintain its curve, and I'm hoping the bondo and mod-podge will help it keep that shape once it all dries. I'll post some pics later tonight of what I mean. Just about to eat dinner.

Re: Link; the Hero of Time (Fan Design)

So I wound up finishing this costume in beta form last week, for a shoot over the weekend. It really snuck up on me due to a number of reasons, and due to time and budget constraints I had to make some pretty big changes to the costume overall. Here are a few snaps from the shoot:

The only things sort of accurate to the artwork are the jerkin, pants and shield, though I changed the decals to match those of Ocarina of Time.

The big kicker was that we couldn't get the chainmail (too pricey in too short a time) and without it, certain details didn't look right. So I did away with the cowl, but left the hood attached to the jerkin. I still want to incorporate the darker green details from the cowl though, as I really like them. I also plan on eventually having more leather armor, and more accurate boots.

It's still a work in progress, but it's wearable. and I'm really happy with how the shield came out. It's 4 layers of EVA foam not counting the decals, all mod podged and painted with acrylic dry-brush techniques. The same for the scabbard, since the sword I bought didn't come with one.

There's also lots of weathering left to be done.

Man this is turning out great. It certainly is giving off that battle hardened look you were going for. I like the eye patch. No one could go through as many battles as Link and not lose SOMETHING.

Digging this concept. Has a sort of assassins creed look to him.Nothing is true. Everything is permitted. ;)

Well, the episode came out and so I nabbed a few screen grabs of the beta costume.

The episode can be seen here, if anybody wants to see it in action.

I've also picked up some proper linen to remake the jerkin and undershirt. The green linen is still sort of subdued, but is more vibrant than what was used in the beta costume. It will also have a better texture, and I'll have enough to make the jerkin and cowl separate pieces, as they were in the concept art. The brown linen is the exact same shade of the lighter brown on the striped pants, so they'll look like a matching set.

My wife and I will be working on the updated gauntlets, which are based on his Ocarina of Time appearance, but will be made with the same leather shown on the mini gauntlets of the beta version. I'm really excited!

Working on version 2.0 of the costume now!

I like this shade of green much better. As cool as the subdued olive was on the last build, this looks more appropriate to me.

Re: Link; the Hero of Time (Fan Design)

I really loved the episode you doods did.
This color does look closer to the subject matter.
Nice new take on the character.

Re: Link; the Hero of Time (Fan Design)

Ooh, I like it!
Reminds me of the 90's thing where they rebooted ALL the things and made them all gritty and dark :p

So cool. Nice take on the costume!

Re: Link; the Hero of Time (Fan Design)

Wow!! What an awesome version of Link! Where will you be wearing this to? So badass!!! I just finished a navi cosplay for myself and am trying to get motivated to make my husband's skull kid!

Honestly I very rarely do events these days. I plan on wearing this to Wondercon in Anaheim this spring, with my wife who's making a Malon costume. I will probably wear it to a few renaissance faires over the next few years. I used to do 5+ cosplay cons a year, but those days are behind me. :p
