Lifesize ED-209 Build. NOW WITH EVEN MORE ED on p.23!!!

Re: Lifesize ED-209 Build. Check it out. You have twenty seconds to comply...

I'm glad to see that storing the molds outside did not effect you pulling another copy.

Does this one get motors so he can walk on his own ? :)

Will this one be the Hello Kitty pink version you teased us with during the pattern build?

That would be AWESOME!!!

No. Just no.

It might, but if I made the ED-309 "Assault Type" version, it'd be awesomER:

But until I get some sort of massive hangar to house a fleet of these guys, I'll just make the 2nd one as another standard version.

At this point, most of the screw heads are installed:

Almost all of the resin parts are cast:

And it's time for a lot of filling seams, grinding off mold flashing, and sanding:

Stay tuned...

"My girlfriend says it's ugly and I'm not allowed to build it." whilst its ugly, Evangelion unit 01 is awesome! if not an eva unit, BUILD A GUNDAM :D jokes aside.... to be fair, it would be incredible...
stupidly gorgeous ED-209 though, really impressed.

I love seeing great threads like this come back from obscurity! Still great work!

Never tired at looking at that marvelous work:)

Obscurity? The whole project started only started seven months ago. I know there's a lot of other stuff happening on the forum since ED was done in May, but the thread is a long way away from "obscure."

With that in mind, work continues on 2nd ED. Here I am laying up the fiberglass dome:

Here's the main body in the process of having all the seams cleaned up and filled in:

Still a lot of work to be done:

I've been taking my time on this one. Second ED is going to be much better looking.

Stay tuned...

Looking good! Are you doing most of the work, or are you still getting lots of help, now that you can do this at a more reasonable pace? I'm sure it's more fun this time...

I've got a couple of people helping, but it's easier to keep a handle on everything with a smaller crew. Since all of the moldmaking and prototyping is already done, it's all a lot easier this time around.

It's amazing how quick things can go awry with too many ladles in the pot.

There's also a special kind of joy in getting to do a project twice.

When you finish a big project you can't help but think about how much easier and better you could do the same project again.

Nice to be able to act on that.

Re: Lifesize ED-209 Build. Check it out. You have twenty seconds to comply...

Better than the first one:eek That's it, I'll need my injection this time:D

Re: Lifesize ED-209 Build. Check it out. You have twenty seconds to comply...

Reaching the home stretch on 2nd ED. I've got the dome laid up:

It's got some dirt smudged on it from wrestling it off of the mold, but otherwise, it's perfect. I'll probably save painting and trimming it for last.

I've started installing the various vacformed detail pieces like these ones on the legs:

Now that all of the individual parts are nearly smoothed out, I've begun making the various sub-assemblies. The first improvement I've made over the original build was to permanently attach the side toes to the feet:

For 1st ED, I thought it would make life easier if we could remove all of the toes and stack them for transport. But since we still had to lug around the big foot pieces, it really didn't make that much of a difference. So for 2nd ED, the side toes are fiberglassed directly onto the plywood:

The front toes will remain removable so that I can add weight to the front of the foot to keep everything balanced during setup and breakdown.

More to come. Stay tuned...
