Lifesize ED-209 Build. NOW WITH EVEN MORE ED on p.23!!!

Re: Lifesize ED-209 Build. Check it out. You have twenty seconds to comply...

Congrats on finishing the project in a spectacular way. I love the pictures of ED at your Mom's house. And thanks for doing the video series, and showing us all how to make such awesome things. They were great. I will be sure to share them around.

I been watching this...... Thorssoli, you are simply epic. Please teach me how to not need real money so I can devote my life to building cool stuff.

Aaaaargghh that's no help.....I really hoped the whole suffering for my art was a falsity

I loved this build! Thanks so much for sharing it. Even though I saw how you made it, I am still baffled by the final product much like a great magician who can show you exactly how he does an illusion and you're still awestruck in the end. Great job.

So, all in all, including labor, what did the final cost of the build come to?!

I have no idea.

The labor cost was negligible (largely friends and family and a few students looking for experience with materials, so I paid for lunches and dinners where applicable). I wasn't having people punch timecards, but there's probably somewhere between 2,500 and 3,500 man-hours worth of labor in there. That includes the 90 minutes my niece spent "helping" before she found out there was math involved and she decided to leave the workshop.

Material cost was a four-figure number of dollars, but I don't have an exact number yet. I know I probably went through one and a half five-gallon buckets of silicone RTV moldmaking rubber and at least $110 worth of resin for the Objet30 3D printer. There was also somewhere between 30 and 50 gallons of polyester resin used in the fiberglass molds and parts.

I've pointedly avoided adding up the receipts so I can have a bit more time just being happy about the project.

Mere words cannot describe it. So I shall make one up: infublimagnanamous!

So, when will you reveal how to time travel? Obviously you went back multiple times in order to do so much work. :)

Just put a little garden gnome hat on him and you're done :)

Spectacular job – a landmark build!

Re: Lifesize ED-209 Build. Check it out. You have twenty seconds to comply...

I wasn't necessarily a 'little kid' when i saw RoboCop but of course i loved the ED-209. Didn't get enough screen time IMHO. Like everyone else on this forum i am totally blown away by your sculpting skills.

I design things on the fly, usually roughing in the basic design in the first 10 minutes, in my head. I not so humbly believe i'm quite good at it. For instance, last night (2am) i was pacing back and forth on the deserted highway out front designing the cocking/ firing/ safety mechanism for the anti-personel rails on my 1:1 scale improved M583 Aliens APC build. Currently in design stage. Also the vertical-launch guided missles, the grenade/ flare launchers, the telescoping antenna mast, the RPV drone tubes, etc. Every time i daydream about it i rework various systems. Yes i know i sound crazy...:D I see amazing robots/ guns/ vehicles on the movie screen then my mind goes to work trying to figure out how to build it and make it work for real.

With a tiny bit of rework courtesy of your father ED could be made to lift one leg and turn (pivoting on a trailer spindle in the other foot). If you wanted to keep it cheap you could build linear actuators from salvage-yard windshield-wiper motors or motor/ planetary gear drive from cordless drills turning allthread. It can easily be made to track passerby with this... Real-Life Sentry Guns for Sale - Software Starter Kit

Software (running on a WinXP platform with decent graphics accelerator) analyzes video from a wide-angle fixed camera, identifies and tracks targets using a servo-controller moving x-y servos, with a Z solenoid/ servo for weapon firing if so desired. Software is FAST and will accurately predictively LEAD the target. You could also put a 60" monitor behind/ beside ED displaying the tracking software as it paints outlines around potential targets (people) walking past in the lobby. Just some food for thought.

If you put a 2.1 logitech computer speaker system inside ED the Bose-style Accoustimass sub would add authentic servo/ diaphram-rumbling sound to ED. Or build a Wicked One subwoofer cabinet and drive it with a 500 watt off the shelf amp. For audio reference https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ldsYjFRsRU8 You could jump to 1:50 to avoid some BS.

Can any of the build materials be reused or do you now have two Ed's one of wood and filler and the final one ?

I am sure thorssoli could provide more detail but the "wood and fillers" were his "protoypes" from which he made fibre glass "masters". If money were no issue, he should be able to build an entire amy of ED-209s from these "masters".

The prototype parts are all garbage at this point. Right now they're piled up next to the workshop awaiting their fate:

If you look closely, you can see that just a short time in the weather (it's rained a handful of times during this build) has already started to take a major toll on the parts that have been out there a bit longer. Pieces and parts are already starting to split and crack and fall off. At some point we're talking about dragging them out into the back field when the county authorizes a trash burning day. Then we'll make a quick mock-up out of them with a couple of 2x4s to hold them up so we can light them up and bask in the glow of toxic purple and green flames. If we ever do get to that, I'll post pics.

Re: Lifesize ED-209 Build. Check it out. You have twenty seconds to comply...

This is one of the most inspiring builds during the last few years here at the rpf.

And such an entertaining read.

Kudos man, really.

While most robot builders will claim that theirs is the biggest, most powerful, or has the most function...

When actually compared, they are really just average.

...But Thorsoli, Yours:

Is clearly the BIGGEST I have ever seen. I mean, it's HUGE! My God, Look at the size of that Monster.
