Re: Lifesize ED-209 Build. Check it out. You have twenty seconds to comply...
You've got some amazing helpers. When I was building scenery I used to dread when they'd give me volunteers. The best you could hope is that you could keep them quietly busy in a corner not interrupting the rest of the work.
Yeah. My crew is pretty awesome. The only challenge is that most everyone is helping out because it's fun. In order to keep it fun, I tend to hand off the more interesting parts to other folks while I do things like polish molds or sand down mold flashing. If nothing else, it keeps my head free so I can coordinate everyone else's efforts. So that's good.
Your lovely assistant is a lot less hairy than mine. And has thumbs.
She also takes the most adorable selfies:
On a personal note; does the Shawnon come in a Thirty-ish Single Norwegian version, or would I have to custom order one?
As far as I know she's the only one there is. She has a cousin in Southern California...
I think I see why you call him Loki. He does appear to cause some mischief! :lol
Actually his mother called him Loki. The rest of us just go along with it.
Great googly moogly this is awesome.
Thanks. I'm steel feeling pretty pressed for time. I have 13 days left to get everything built and painted and loaded up on a truck.
Kate was in the shop to help out yesterday. She started by separating the parts of the pelvis mold:
The mold came apart clean, but one part of the prototype broke off in the process:

That's a great testament to how well the mold was made as well as how flimsy the prototype was. Everything is going according to plan.
While she was cleaning up the hairy edges of the mold and getting started polishing the inside of it, I set to work scoring in all of the cutouts for the main body:
Scoring these lines will leave noticeable marks on the cast fiberglass parts that should make it a lot quicker to pick out where to cut holes for detail parts. There's a lot of them:
But once I was done with the scoring, the next step was to give the whole thing it's final gloss coat of my standard prototype color:
On the subject of cutouts, Shawnon got started on putting in the socket screw inserts for the toes:
She started by marking out their positions and then making the cutouts with a hole saw:
The cast screw head details were glued in from the inside. Sadly, this is the only photo I snapped of those guys yesterday:
Meanwhile, I got tons of pics like this one:
And a handful like this:
So that was yesterday. Today I should be getting a start on the mold for the main body. I'm also going to be making forming bucks for the joint parts between the toes and getting the first copy of the pelvis out of the mold.
More updates tomorrow. In the meantime, MAKE Magazine is trying to decide if it's worth their while to keep doing these videos and having me write accompanying articles. I never have enough free time to tackle my own video editing, so if you've found the videos useful or entertaining, make sure to go to YouTube, leave a comment, and watch the hell out of those things. If you really want to do me a favor, post a link on Facebook or the like. You can also take another look at all of the articles (with videos embedded) by clicking here:
