I don't know If this is a problem or not but I have out 2 coats of latex so far on my suit. But when it dries it goes clear whenint was white like how I've seen pictures. I don't know if this is supposed to happen when it dries but I am a little worried, and help really appreciated

As the latex air dries, it typically changes colors to either clear or slightly yellow, depending on the make of latex and the number of layers. The longer the piece sits the yellower it may become if you haven't painted or tinted it yet. I had a few latex pieces that were unpainted and untinted and they turned very yellow. Then I painted them and they haven't had any issues.

Thank so much! I am just a noob to this and have never done anything like this. Yeah it has a cleanish yellow color, but ill have to be patient! So when all coats are added does that mean it'll be clear? Because I haven't tinted the latex, should it be white?

i just read about a person who used a pinkish acrylic paint to mix with the latex, does that work because I can do that

When you add acrylics to latex, it'll color the latex to the color of the paint but it'll make it have a glossy apparence. Easy way to fix that is to dust the layer with talc or baby powder. That'll take off the shine. I wouldn't do that dusting until you have done your final coat though because the glossy appearance also means that better adhesion of more layers of latex will occur. Also, be careful because any non-dusted areas of dry latex will bond to itself and can cause major headaches. In your case I'd watch the armpits and arms to ensure they don't stick to the body.

Here is a latex brain I made. I cast it in latex and let it sit for well over 6 months before painting it. Left side is dusted and right is not. As you can see (hopefully) the left side is duller and the right side is good and shiny. I painted it with matte Red and Pink (red plus white) acrylics mixed with latex. Piece is fully flexible and because of the dusting on the one side it wont stick to itself. After dusting the piece you can wash the dust off and it'll look fine and wont be shiny

Hope this helps!

I've never seen latex go clear once it's cured.  Usually (like Gabe mentioned) it's a yellowish or orangish color.  I mixed brown acrylic paint in with mine and had no problems with it becoming glossy.  How are you applying it?  I sponged mine on, and have 5 pretty thick layers (avoid brushing as it will leave brush marks that show through the finished paint).  I wouldn't go too crazy with too many layers, as each layer will make the suit less mobile.  One last thing you need to be sure of is that the latex is fully curing before adding more on top pf it.  Temperature and humidity play a role with drying times, as well as how thick you put it on.  I let my cure 6-8 hours between coats just to be sure, but it was a little cool in my workshop.  Looks to me like you're exactly where you should be.

P.S.  If you do talc the piece, do not do it before your final paint.  The latex MUST be clean and dry before any ink is applied, or it won't stick and you'll end up with a big mess.  You can talk it after applying the permawet but that sort of defeats the purpose of a gloss clear coat.

there are clear latex products out there depending on where you buy it. I had some molding latex from Douglas And Sturgis that always dried clear. As for tinting. It wasnt your acrylics that left a sheen ..it was the rubber itself ...Acrylic paint has nothing in it's properties to turn rubber from matte to shiny. However ...acrylic paint in large quantities will degrade latex. If pre-tinting latex, use a universal tint such as Pro-Line. you will only need a few drops to tint a large batch ..

There ya go wolf. My latex experience has always been smaller prosthetics rather than massive suits so I'd listen to the big guys here with regards to tinting and inking your suit. Good luck!

Trust anything PT Greek says-- he works in the industry and is a wealth of information and help.  But yes, the latex will dry somewhat clear as well. I am doing my suit , in a different manner, kind of Frankensteining it together with 4 way stretch fabric over foam and then latex over that and it goes on white and dries clear. not to worry.

well it could be thinned latex ...sometimes you get bad batches that are watered down. Do you know the type or brand latex you are using? Another method is to paint roll it on ..using detail rolling sponges ( they are about four inches long and are used to detail around baseboards ) they will come with small plastic trays ..keep the trays somewhat full and keep the rollers in the wet latex ..it wont cure on the roller if not exposed to air ..leaving the roller useful much longer. You can buy proline tint at home depot now. a drop of red and a drop or two of brown in natural latex will give you a flesh tone base. 4 layers is still sort of thin ..you can definitely keep going

Thanks everyone for the help! I stopped at 6 layers and that did it! Now I have to paint it and add net. I was using monster makers rd407
