Kylo Ren Helmet Sculpt - (Old School Version 2 beginning pg17)

Re: Kylo Ren Helmet Sculpt - (Old School WIP)

Great everyone!... Be sure to post any links to videos or threads you like... And when the time comes pics of your paint up!

Re: Kylo Ren Helmet Sculpt - (Old School WIP)

When I painted my mando helmet, weathering was made very easy by applying an over-all metallic coat after the primer, then painting/splattering some masking fluid (like this), letting that dry, then painting over it with the final color. Once everything is dry you can gently rub the masking fluid and it will come off along with the top layer of paint. It gives a very natural weathered look. You can enhance that by using a black wash to get some black paint around the chip to simulate dirt/carbon.

I prefer spraypaint but given the intricacy of this helmet I'm not sure if I'll go that rout this time! My mando helmet was pretty easy to tape and basic in design, this helmet is much different! Taping off his cheek design thingies looks like it may be a nightmare. If I go the spraypaint rout I may prime the whole helmet, lay down a coat of metallic as usual, then use the masking fluid on the cheeks & forehead (instead of taping) and put small bits of it into the dents and dings, then hit it with some gunmetal paint and peel off the masking fluid then do a black wash. Need to study the images a bit more and test some colors of paint!

You have seen the dome!?!?:eek... Holy cow!... Wish you could say more!... But, I'm sure you can't. I'm absolutely positive that I'm missing things, we had so little to really go on right now... I almost feel we are just taking a random shot in the dark and hoping it sticks.... Thanks for the compliment though!... Truly an honor to here from someone who knows, and still likes it!

Are you a wizard?!

nope, I am working on it.

I have to admit that I have been lurking for a while and I really liked this thread.

I like all the SW threads I've seen so far on the RPF and how the ppl is been able to catch all the details from any picture available on the web.

The funny part of this hobby is there.

Still a lot to discover though.

Keep up the hard work.

I don't want to hijack this one now.

I cannot say more than what I previously did don't PM please.

This is all very exciting

Re: Kylo Ren Helmet Sculpt - (Old School WIP)

Amazing work.
Do you think it would fit a 24 inch head?

Lol... You would be surprised how many times I have been asked that question privately... My best answer is, it better! I have a big noggin too (23 1/4")!!! Haha! ...Actually, it should be fine from what I can tell. As far as measurements are concerned it's not a small bucket. (Thankfully, I believe Adam Driver must have had a big head too!) But since I could not put on the clay model, I can't say with absolute certainty... Once I have the first one cast in a week and a half, I'll let everyone know for sure. My big head will serve as the example! Haha.

Re: Kylo Ren Helmet Sculpt - (Old School WIP)

I just noticed something I'd never noticed before on the ridges around the eye-hole area. It appears in this picture that there are lips on the top and bottom of the face of each ridge that slowly blend to flush. Has anyone else noticed this? You really have to look at it zoomed in to see them.

I am trying to understand what your talking about, can you circle it or something...

Re: Kylo Ren Helmet Sculpt - (Old School WIP)

Sorry, I had limited resources since I was working when I noticed it.

I described it terribly, as well. What I was getting at is that there are raised edges on the top and bottom of each ridge that eventually fade to flush. The red highlighted area shows the raised edges, and the green arrows show where it appears to go flush with the ridges. You will still have to zoom in pretty close, and probably reference it to the non-highlighted image as well.

And this could be totally common knowledge, and I'm just really late to the party, but this was the first time I'd noticed this detail.

Talking about details, is it just me or is there some kind of canva under the lid ? I mean, if you look in the holes of the chics, it seems to be something like canva.
