Well, I confess this build changes my opinion of what can be done with the kit. The in-flight mode is definitely more interesting than the landed look. Would still like to figure out how best to make the wings pivot.

A Japanese modeler did a similarily nice job on lighting, and also documented the detail improvements he made: LINK (you have to scroll down a bit)

Yeah, that one looks nice too. Much better with the wings spread. I haven't done any research into the details on the "real" ship, but it looks like the four pistons push/pull the wings into their two configurations, which would require some telescoping rods with pivot points on the end. I can't tell if there is a hinge farther down on the wing near the landing gear, but if so it looks like moveable wings could be do-able. The build also looks better with lights. If only there was a way to model the lens flare....
