Kolchak: The Night Stalker

To this day if I close my eyes in the dark I see this.

A show before it's time. X-files before there was an X-files.

Someone mentioned to me there was a remake ...never saw it. Don't see any point in seeing it since Darren was Kolchack.

Funny hat, wierd suit, and his old mustang.

Richard Matheson wrote a script for a third movie, "The Night Walkers", which was to be about Zombies. But Darren McGavin was so upset at how the tv show was treated by the network that he refuse to do it.

Actually the 3rd unproduced TV movie was to be called The Night Killers and was about politicians being replaced by robot doubles. It was going to be set in Hawaii, and was never made because the powers that be were more interested in doing a weekly series than another TV movie.

For anyone interested, I think The Night Killers script was eventually published maybe with the scripts from the other 2 TV movies a few years back. A quick Google search should turn it up if so.

Man I used to LOVE this show! But I haven't watched a single episode since it was last on the air (like... 35 years ago? :wacko).

I passed on the boxset that was out years ago- I think I'm worried that my love for this show as a kid might not stand up to the test of time.

I still have my fond memories! :thumbsup

Maybe it got turned into Futureworld, the sequel to Westworld. As that is the plot.

I was very young so my mom wouldn't let me watch it. However, there were a handful of times I did manage to catch it. The one that sticks out in my mind was something about mannequinns coming to life...?

Seems like that plot's been reused so many times. Be easy to tell which were robots. They wouldn't be sleeping with the babysitters, getting caught in airport bathrooms, or they'd make intelligent speeches and good decisions. :lol

That was the one with Lara Parker as an up and coming fashion designer using witchcraft to destroy her rivals in the business. She used the mannequins to take out someone who was taking PICS of her designs.

Im still not sure whether the "Tyrell Corp." in the Mr. Ring episode was the inspiration for the Tyrell Corp. in Blade Runner.

Does anyone know if PKD's novel mentioned the Tyrell Corp, or was it added only to the film?

You'll never know if you don't try. ;)

But I know what you mean; there were several shows I watched as a kid that didn't pass the test of time. Fortunately, even as a kid I knew Kolchak had some weak episodes and that the series overall suffered from Universal's standard practice of making every production "on the cheap", so the box set lived up to my memories. And Darren McGavin's performances in every episode are worth watching--he was the show.

Qft!

I'm going through the Series now and I was 13 when it first aired which is the only time I have seen these episodes untill now.

Man what a blast from the past, we used to dog it sometimes as kids especially the Wolfman episode and the female Vampire but we still loved the show as well as McGavin.

He and Simon Oakland owned their roles as well as the Series

Clunkers aside....."Horror In The Heights" is a masterpiece. Written by Hammer Horror Alum Jimmy Sangster too!

Such a cool show. This and Doctor Who were among my very favorite things to come on TV when I was a kid. I can remember it being somewhat late at night and asking if Kolchak was coming on and my mom not knowing. I lived for those moments when I would hear that whistling in the intro. I got so excited. LOVED the show. I rediscovered the show about 7 or 8 years ago and watched them all again during a marathon. Now I am rewatching them all again via Netflix. I am working on getting myself a hat, and I need to get myself that watch!

If I recall correctly, Kolchak's first TV movie was written by Richard Matheson (of I Am Legend fame).
