Well, I have my orders in for the hat from Barons, and a suit. 
This has got to be one of the most expensive obscure costumes. Had to do a rush order for the hat so that cost extra. That is the single most expensive piece of clothing I have ever payed for, and it's a hat, for a Halloween costume. I might just have to wear it normally now to get my moneys worth. :lol Now if I could only find this freaking tripod adapter. :angry So far I've only seen them listed with a full camera kit, and I am not paying $299 for a whole kit when I just need to adapter. Granted it's a 16s, which apparently there where only 20,000 made. Not much actually different between the two.

More affordable hat alternatives
After exhaustive nights Google searching. Just add the right color hatband. Don't ask me where to find the hatbands. I just can't abide by Baron's charging almost $300 for a $10 vintage straw hat style that really isn't even completely accurate that the one Darren wore (the crown is way too high). They're the only game in town so it doesn't seem they're that worried about real accuracy despite the steep price. I was thinking of sourcing a straw hatmaker to do these but most will only offer price breaks with 50 or more (and that's to keep them in the $30 - $50 range).

I hear you like I said earlier in this thread I had the EXACT hat when the show was on for $5.00 and they were sold all over the place I got mine from 7/11.
Barons is also famous for crappy customer service also but I took a chance and rolled the dice.
He has 2 weeks to finish mine and that's it ,I'm done with him. :unsure

There's another hat shop in L.A. called Movieland Hats on Vine I'm going to go visit when I'm there this Friday to see if they may have something similar. My eyes have been bleeding searching straw hat sites I'm amazed no one makes the style anymore. That one at the Chinese site looks closer than the Baron one but they have not responded to my inquiry yet.

So I contacted Baron's today out of curiosity to see if they can even get a hat out with a month's lead time for Hallloween. They told me it would cost an extra $100 for the "rush" making it $375 plus shipping.
Seriously.
I think it would be generous to expect that even 15% of people seeing us dressed like Carl Kolchak on Halloween would even get the joke of who we are, and that 15% doesn't make a $375 hat that's not even really screen accurate from a vendor who wants to exploit the holiday seem very smart.
So I went on a scavenger hunt today to Hats Plus in Chicago and picked this up for $15 marked down from $30 since some of the straw in the crown was torn, which I already mended with some Super Glue:
All I have to do is find a red and black boater's style replacement hat band and I think it will work fine enough.

lol, I understood what you meant. They do say that he used different styles at times. And it looks like the one they have the hat banned is actually just pulled lower than the one that is in the picture in the car. Also it looks like it might be a little thinner than it.

Checked the Movieland hat store out here in L.A. on Sunset and Vine to see if I could find anything a little closer to the original design, but apparently it's perpetually closed with a bunch of straw hats on display in the window. So I think mine will do for now.

Congratulations. I had a bid on that one, and a TC-45. Won the 45 so I let the 40 pass. I'm the one that bumped it up to $30 for you :lol That TC-40 sounds like a pretty good deal, here's to hoping the 45 works.
