Hey cats,

I'm looking to put together a Superman movies General Zod costume.

The jumpsuit shouldn't be much of a challenge, but anybody have any suggestions about those boots (as in, something that won't cost me hundreds of $$$?)

Go with a low PVC boot, and add the tops yourself. Plain black PVC isn't expensive.

As you're in Los Angeles, go hit the fashion district downtown. You might find some vinyl for really cheap (99c a yard). Another thought, is look into places that sell fetish footwear(again there's plenty of those in LA). You might find a pvc boot that actually matches!

Beleive it or not Salvation Army shops and Second Chance Clothing shops are also a gold mine of stuff.

He does some awesome bootwork, and should be able to point you in the right direction. That isn't too far off his Thor boots he did...

Remember to keep one very important thing in mind:

All the vinyl trimming and boots are actually a very very very deep shade of red.

I'm not sure if it's a specialy dyed deep metalic red vinyl, or if it's black vinyl overlayed with clear red (which seems more likely), but whichever way, it's red.

Thanks for the reminder on the color - which is most obvious in the scenes when Zod lands in the lake and is in direct sunlight.

I've been considering doing "spats" over regular boots f I can't find anything that can match with the material I get for the trim on the jumpsuit.

I've got a funny feeling that I'm going to have to go with the "default" black, though.

Well, I'm back from the Metropolis Superman Celebration, and it was a BLAST!

General Zod was very well received, but for some reason, everybody in blue tights and a red cape wanted to kick my ass. Oh well, a Super-Villains work is never done.

Thanks for all the advice on the suit. I went with black vinyl, and while it's not as shiny (or with the blood-red tinge) as the original, it still worked and nobody busted me on not being glossy enough

The boots were found on eBay, brand new for about $60, which I thought was GREAT!

Awesome costume man! Got the figure and love it and want to do the costume now. Actually it was a deep red indeed and you can see it better on the Blu-ray. Any tips on where to get the boots and jump suit and what to use for the trim? I am hoping for the same colors as the movie or close to them. Here are some pics.

The jumpsuit was all custom made. I think we used a pirate shirt pattern for the top half to get the big sleeves, and we just attached some pants to the bottom half. I step through the opening in the front, which is cut to the waist. There's a velcro tab to close it up on the chest, and the belt velcros in the back.

I dug around on eBay for the boots, I think I got them for $50, but that was 7 years ago
