it seems that the swords and costumes from this company are pretty affordable...

"Windlass Steelcrafts"

i am considering the Sword of Ibelin used by Orland Bloom and Liam Neeson (although for some reason its not shown for sale on this link)

has anyone seen these up close?...are they high quality, or at least as good as the United Cutlery stuff?

that King Baldwin (the leper king) mask is pretty sweet too...

thanks.

If you liked the queen in Kingdom of Heaven, find a movie called "The dreamers". Shes in it. In the old birthday suit... :eek Its a keeper...

thanks for the heads up...she is very pretty

i just finished the new four disc "Directors Cut" so i'm all jacked up on picking up some of the movies props

thanks again

I don't know if I could even put the MRL sword from KoH and the UC LOTR stuff in the same category. The MRL stuff is made from spring steel (I'll refrain from launching a functional/non functional debate) and are lighter and fairly well balanced for a replica. You can get nicely made scabbards with working belts right off the bat. Whereas the UC stuff is really made to be strict deisplay pieces. They are mayeb higher quality in fit and finish but it's much easier to costume with a MRL KoH sword.

thats great to know...

i have the "musuem collection" Sting sword from LOTR and i think that one is spring steel...but it is more $$ than the regular LOTR swords from UC

it sounds like the KoH swords are pretty high quality then...i just wonder how screen accurate they are...??

thanks

I don't know if I'd jump to "high quality." They are very nice for the price and nice replicas. But I had some some quality issues with mine and my friend, who got a King of Jerusalem sword and scabbard, also had some small build issues with his.

I haven't done a ton of research on the swords from the films but the MRL stuff appears to be pretty dead-on.

defyitall,

what kind of quality and build issues?

would you buy it again knowing what you know?

thanks

It was little things: my friends scabbard had a piece that was attached crooked. My scabbard is very loose. Little things like that. Honestly, I would buy again because, for the price, you kind of expect there to be some little things like this. They are made overseas.

I didn't pay $1500 for a Christian Fletcher sword or anything.

I have never seen the mask but a guy I know on the United Cutlery (now Ultimate Collector's forums) bought it and said it is a nice piece though he was disappointed that it was made of molded fiberglass and painted with a metal faux finish.

Christian Fletcher is a very good sword maker. Well, he buys blades from Angus Trim and Albion but makes his own furniture (crossguards, pommels, grips, and handles) and scabbards. I used him as an example because I am a fan. But also because he makes rather interesting grips and he is one of the only custom sword makers I know that makes scabbards that anyone would call "interesting." In that they go beyond being just functional or historical.

defyitall,

thanks for all the help...i made my way over to that other forum and found some great links on this topic

i plan to pick up a couple of these pieces in the coming months...i will post a review then

thanks again

Sorry I didn't post earlier, but here are some photos of My King Baldwin mask.

It looks amazing if you don't inspect it too closely, I love it though, one of my favourites.

It seems to be made from some sort of light plastic and painted with silver paints. The leaf design is painted in a lighter silver to try and make it look more like metal. Generally, the paint work is okay, but I've noticed a few blotches and scratches.

Cutting out of the eyes, nose, mouth is a bit crude too.

There is a thin black lining inside, seems like leather, but might be PVC.

Overall i'd say it's an impressive prop, made cheaply, but for the price, it's incredible.

great pics and review...thanks.

i am going to go ahead and get one, thats just too cool

im sure it could be repainted?...i wish i was as talented as some here on this forum when it comes to that.

thanks again

I'd like to hear what people think of the other weapons/props.

I own the Saracen war club & mace, the war axe and war hammer. I love all four of them but disliked the aged finish. I took it off with some steel wool to a bright copper finish I then chemically aged it to get some green patina as it looks more accurate.

They are pretty much combat quality weapons (I've been a SCA hardsuit fighter since 86) with the exception of the axe that can't be sharpened. The movie props of the saracen weapons are said to be from molds of original pieces (the movie used recasts LoL) and made rubber props that windlass recast in metal (recasting of the recast)

Windlass makes functional swords compared to decorator pieces that United Cutlery makes (no insult to UC, each company has different goals). I once cut down a tree with a windlass sword, I would not advise that with a UC.

Does anyone have the Hospitaller robe with attached chainmail, and if so could you post a picture showing how they attached it to the cloth?

I'm looking (again) for the sword of Ibelin by Windlass.

If you have any info, or one for sale, shoot me a PM.

thanks!

I have this sword..one of my favorites. I do believe it is spring steel if that means it can flex with out breaking. I had a catalog showing one with a sharpened edge cutting through small trees and showing how much it can flex.

If you come across one pic it up. If you need pic I can snap shots of mine

Good carbon steel will flex without breaking, I own a sword in carbon steel made by Fulvio Del Tin himself in the 1980s that can bend further than a capital D and snap back into shape.

Windlass hand makes their swords with a carbon content ranging from 1065 to 1095 with an end hardness of 48 to 52 Rockwell. They will bend, but they are carbon steel and can be sharpened.

I actually have one of these Ibelin Swords that is Sharpened... and I WISH that I also had one that was UN-Sharpened... The Sharpened one is really cool, but I am always worried when taking it out of the Ibelin Scabbard, because it then becomes a real weapon... which means I can't take it to some places these days because of stricter laws...

I had to get one of the cheaper $60 to put into the Scabbard to take to Renaissance Faires or Conventions... while my REAL one stays in the proproom ( the garage )... dammit...

So I am looking for an Un-Sharpened one too...

**BUT.... If I DID find one, I would tell darthwhitey or someone who needed it first... I suppose I could always have my blade made dull by a swordmaker...
