Kathleen Kennedy is stepping down

Check out this interview:

Deadline has not been reporting yesterday's news; I think they are firmly in her back pocket, and even they are challenging her just a little!

Nice rambling non-denial, eh?
I wonder how big of a check was written for that one ....

I have heard a new piece of news today.

Apparently, leadership inside Disney is not pleased at all about the Deadline article (see above) where she's half-way denying things, and that Iger and Favreau have accelerated her departure. Favreau was apparently overheard saying that it is a blessing in disguise.

Additionally, the writer of the article on Puck is lashing out at Deadline for a being sycophantic article. TRADES DO NOT NORMALLY ATTACK TRADES.

And finally, there are apparently some legal memos going out from Iger's office to Lucasfilm's legal team today. We don't know what's in those notices, but they might be related to settling with Gina Carano, settling with Karyn McCarthy, and/or accelerating Kennedy's departure.

TLDR: She poked the bear after being told how things are, and the bear is upset.

No effect. She’s a scape goat.

All of these arguments would hold water if Star Wars was the only franchise that contracted the disease, but it isn’t. ALL of Disneys properties have the same symptoms. The cause can only be coming from higher up.

Just saw an aeticcle where she complains upcoming sw get so much critiquing before they are released....well, one it means people care. But more importantly, dont leakminfo to get free publicity. Who in the world thinks people arent going to piece together whats going on when you inte tionally leak your cast week by week to keep your project in the headlines? Literally by doing that you invite conjecture at every step. Worse, with your track record people only look for those things which have mostly been bad. You dont get to complain people think your next project will be bad when 80-90% of what you have put out has been bad.

I didn’t believe it when it was reported she would be leaving. In fact, I suspect that this as planned as a way to drum up interest in Andor. Even if she actually posted a video of her announcing she’s retiring and going to live a quiet life in a farm somewhere, I STILL wouldn’t believe she’ll retiring. And with the Deadline interview she posted, she’s basically saying she’s gonna continue to be in charge of LucasFilm to the point where it’ll be pried out from her cold dead hands.

This is liable to get ugly.

Astyanax - if Kennedy was basically un-fire-able in past years, then what has changed to make her leave now?

Two reasons:

1. Her contract has expired.

2. They have enough on her now to destroy her career as well. Mutually assured destruction. You expose me, I expose you, so how about you go away quietly?

I saw SW when it came out in the 70s and it was , as far as I knew , a self contained sci-fi movie...with so many off-shoots sooner or later a kk was going to show up and crap all over it from a great height ! Lucas should have quit in 77 and never given this spoiler a chance to feed on his creation !

Is doesn't matter if she leaves. She's pretty much said she's going to have her hands in things (or thinks she will) even if she appoints a successor. New SW is dead guys.

So there's actually a contract expiration?

It seems like it would take a contractual change like that. If she was willing to leave voluntarily just because of internal pressure then she would already be gone years ago.

Her last several years at LFL have seemed combative (at least if we put any faith in the rumor mill). And she definitely uses the press to manipulate (just look at all the weaponized fake movie announcements).

Bob Iger is gonna need something pretty serious to hold over her head if he wants to muscle her out. She probably won't go quietly over anything less than a criminal charge, like a big financial fraud.

If I was Iger, I don't think I would trust her to go 100% quietly no matter what. She's liable to agree to his terms and then later she will leak something to the press in retaliation.

Yeah, fair points. It might get uglier, we'll see.

And yes, her 3-year contract expired back in October. I believe she quietly signed a multi-month extension, but not a long one.
