Jurassic Park Velociraptor Build Thread; Target Date --> Halloween 2013

re: Jurassic Park Velociraptor Build Thread; Target Date --> Halloween 2013

It came out really nice! I wasn't sure how your fabric choice would look when finished but it's actually really neat. :D

Yeah, I was very happy with how the fabric ended up looking and behaving (except for the fact that I had too much material at the neck area, but that was a final-hour job).

re: Jurassic Park Velociraptor Build Thread; Target Date --> Halloween 2013

Awesome!! How did you attach the fabric to the foam parts? Spray glue?

I just used hot glue to attach the fabric to the foam. That's NOT incredibly strong, of course. In fact, I remember tearing the fabric AWAY from the glue for a large portion of the back of the head... and then re-gluing it, when I felt I had made a mistake.

I was very worried that the fabric at the end of the tail would fray and get badly damaged, because when my back hurts, I have to stand and walk upright in the costume, so the tail drags. ( I had TRIED to use a heat gun to bend the PVC attachment point shortly before going out in this costume, but the heat gun started burning some foam glue -- 3M 74 spray -- near that connection, so I quickly aborted that idea.) But the fabric held up. I even had some stupid kid run over my tail with his bike!

Re: Velociraptor Build Thread; Target Date --> Halloween 2013

LOL There is no higher complement than that. Congrats! It looks great! But I bet it gets pretty toasty inside the suit...

You know, my wife is telling people that all the time: "He's just burning up in there! It's just incredibly hot in there!" Well, it was maybe 65 degrees out. My arms and my legs are basically inside the equivalent of a cotton shirt covered by a polyester shirt. So they're not hot at all. The body cavity is fairly spacious inside. I could fit my arms inside of it, but it'd be a bit tight. But my body itself didn't seem all that hot. The head area was hot because I ended up with way too much fabric hanging down from the neck (and then getting tucked-in at the collar area).

I've got two tiny laptop cooling fans here that I'll probably install into the body tomorrow to help out with the heat.

But really, when I'm in-costume, the heat only bothers me a little. Once you're soaked with sweat, you're kinda used to it. My Ironman costume was hotter. But when I wore that to the bar, I just stepped outside to their back patio where the smokers all hung out, and chatted with them for a while.

Not being able to SEE annoys me a whole lot MORE than the heat. (Which is funny, because, during a "normal day" / i.e. when I'm NOT wearing a costume, I've grown to HATE the heat / 90 degree plus days... over the years!)

Thanks!

By the way, I DO intend to enter the costume contest here, just to be a part of it. I just have to be sure to get a photo of me holding up an "RPF" sign this weekend.

Thanks!

Can't wait to see more pictures! Did you ever get the moving jaw?

re: Jurassic Park Velociraptor Build Thread; Target Date --> Halloween 2013

Can't wait to see more pictures! Did you ever get the moving jaw?

Not yet... I'm just now circling back around to everything I need to do before Saturday:

PRIORITY #1: Ability to SEE
I have some of that buckram stuff that fursuiters use to see out of their costumes. I'd resisted the idea of using it, because typically, you have to paint it to match your costume. But I'm going to have to use it to create a fairly large area of the neck that I can see out of. It's some pretty stiff stuff. So perhaps what I need to do is glue a layer of fabric (with the backing removed from it) OVER it. Not sure.

My only other choice would seem to be to try to paint it in some manner so that it looks like a natural "throat sack" for the raptor.

PRIORITY #2: Increase the amount of time I'm able to wear the head / i.e. reduce pain due to head trying to slide forward and down and thereby choking me with the helmet straps.

It would seem I need to somehow move the center of gravity of the head backwards. Now, that would mean either adding weight to the back of the head or removing weight from the snout... or both. I'm thinking... I could probably use the nose holes to carve into the snout. I could also, in theory, peel away the roof of the mouth, carve upwards to remove extra foam, and then re-glue the roof of the mouth into place. Not sure if that'd be good enough, though. My gut says there's a lot of foam in the area of the eyes-and-forehead. I would have to remove the skin material from that area, which might be a bit tricky.

The helmet is heavy enough so I really don't think adding weight to the back of the head would be smart. That said, it'd probably be fairly easy for me to dig some sort of "pockets" into the back of the neck and tuck something heavy into them.

The only other thought I had on this was that I could perhaps use an elastic strap to somehow strap the back of the head / neck area to the PVC base of the neck. And then that would apply an "opposite force" as the head tried to slip forward. But it seems to me that would make putting on the head-helmet a lot trickier and might actually restrict movement when you WANT to nod the head forward.

Any thoughts ?

PRIORITY THREE: Add the moving mouth

As I'd mentioned in a previous post, just adding an elastic strap between the raptor chin and my own chin was an option suggested by that one person's "Tiger of the Wind" costume over on some Fursuit forums. However, I wondered if I could just run some strong fishing line or cable up THROUGH the lower jaw and connect it to a wide fender washer... or some other wide object that would help spread out the force when I pulled the line. And then connect that line to my chin.

I'm also a bit worried about exactly HOW I'm going to connect that line or even the elastic strap to my chin. In the Tiger of the Wind photos / video, it sort of looks like it's attached to her chin-strap, which would make sense. But my chin strap is a bicycle helmet connection. Would I just tie or glue the connection to one of those two bike helmet straps? Not sure. Wish I had more examples of what others have done to go by. But not very many people seem to have creature heads that actually sit ABOVE their own.

PRIORITY FOUR: Sound Effects

I have all the materials. The problem is, exactly HOW am I going to trigger each effect? Meaning: WHERE is the switch going to be and am I using a finger to switch it? I have a set of five "cloth switches", where the switches are already built into a piece of cloth. That'd be great, if my raptor hands weren't already subdivided into fingers. If the hand was like one big mitten, then it'd just be a matter of hot-gluing that set of switches into place. But it's more like half-mitten, half-glove. Two human fingers inside one raptor finger, then two more, and then my thumb in the thumb.

Of course, I could go with a more-standard switch. (And really, my original dream was to use three switches: one for quick chirp sound effects, one for long roars, and one for in-between duration roars. But with this hand issue and given the time remaining, I'm willing to rig up just one switch.)

But again, where do I put it? What hand or finger do I use? I thought about using my mouth, but hey, I'll probably already be using my chin to open and close the mouth. And you don't want to rig the sounds to ALWAYS play when YOUR mouth opens, if it's YOUR mouth that's triggering the creature's mouth to open. You can't talk to your friends if you do that !

PRIORITY FIVE: Shove in two fans

That's about it, but that's plenty !! Any advice on my issues / decisions here would be greatly appreciated. Gonna go get started on the buckram vision thing now.

Thanks!

re: Jurassic Park Velociraptor Build Thread; Target Date --> Halloween 2013

Good luck! I don't have much advice for you.

re: Jurassic Park Velociraptor Build Thread; Target Date --> Halloween 2013

Status update:

Priority 1 -- Ability to SEE -- I removed a lot of excess material at the neck area. I then made a sort of cardboard rectangle and cut the center out of it, almost to create a sort of "visor". I then bent this slightly backward into a "V" and glued it into the neck. I then removed the backing layer from the material in that area so I could see through it. I measured everything carefully as I went, so I should be able to see out of it in daylight just fine. Not sure about a somewhat-dark bar.

Priority 2 -- Keep the head from slipping forward -- Fortunately, I have a big bag of belts, suspenders, straps, and other assorted such parts, left over from previous costume work. I found two nylon dog collars, the kind with the plastic snaps. They were the same size. I inserted one through the bicycle helmet in the head and left both ends dangling out. I then went to the body and inserted the other one into that, wrapping it around the PVC spine for strength... and then dangling the ends of the collar out from that. Now, I can put the head on and feel behind me to attach the two collars to each other and it removes a lot of the forward pressure! I still think I need to insert some more foam at the head / forehead to help reduce irritation.

Priority #3 -- Moving mouth. I took some green 50 pound test fishing line. Attached two lead ball sinkers to the end of it after threading a fender washer onto it. Pulled string tight so that the sinkers were tight with it. Poured hot glue over the sinkers and the top of the washer... and then over the knot on the other side of the washer. I had some needles for leather-work on-hand from last year's costume work, so I pushed the fishing line through the lower jaw, near the back of it.

This will work, but I'm concerned about one thing: It's already hard enough putting the head on without then having to worry about sending some fishing line down the inside of my shirt. Obviously, I need to rig that part up in advance. So, today, I intend to cut the fishing line at about the two foot mark and attach a ring. Then, I'll take a second piece of fishing line, attach a ring at one end and a clip at the other. Run that piece up my left arm and "store" the clip end onto the end of my shirt collar. Then, when I get into my costume and put the head on, I should just be able to take the clip... detach it from my shirt, and attach it to the metal ring at the end of the first piece of fishing line to form one continuous piece. Crossing my fingers that this will work.

So, along with that bit of work, I'll be working on Priority #4 and #5 today.

Thanks!

re: Jurassic Park Velociraptor Build Thread; Target Date --> Halloween 2013

Update:

OK, so real life sucked up my time until about 2 PM yesterday... and then I went through a period of being really mentally tired / out-of-it from 4 PM - 6 PM, so it was not the best day costume-wise.

I started working on the sound system, but then I remembered... the fans. I decided that they were more important than the sound system and could be finished on-time (where-as I was starting to realize I didn't have enough time left to implement the sound effects).

So, two fans went in, both in the back, about 3 feet apart, the bottom-most one pointing inward, the top-most one pointing outward. I tried the body on with the fans engaged and could NOT really tell any difference, but tonight will be the proof of that, one way or the other. I did cut away the "skin" from above the fans, because I thought even having that thin layer would restrict air flow. I then found some olive green acrylic paint I had lying around and quickly painted the viewable part of the fans. Gotta go give them a quick second coat here in a minute.

And I just now finally tested the moving-the-mouth functionality... and it still needs a bit of work. I think I'm going to have to abort this as well. The fishing line likes to stretch... and having the right-length line seems to be critical in getting some mouth-action out of this thing. Because, in my ignorance, I used a very thick / heavy foam, it takes a bit of force to open that mouth. And while I was testing it, the fishing line was rubbing sharply against my skin at a couple points. Five hours of that and I'd probably have blood. What it needs is an outer sleeve, somewhat like a bicycle cable. Plus, I need a line that won't stretch on me so much.

So, this will be disappointing as it's the second year now that my "special effects" weren't ready on-time. On the one hand, though, once I work out the Arduino-to-switch wiring and programming, I'll be able to re-use that sound box again and again. I won't be "starting from scratch" on the sound system with the next costume. I can continue from where I left off.

And I can't help but wonder if there's some way I can get AROUND running wires up my sleeves with the Arduino... perhaps some way to use a REMOTE switch. I'll have to research that.

In a similar way, the wiring of any puppetry-like strings running inside a costume, down to my fingers is something I have yet to accomplish properly. Last year, I never came close, because I changed tactics on Davey Jones' tentacles; I gave up on mechanically-pulled tentacles and tried going with electrically-pulled tentacles, but aborted that when the wire I used (which shrank 5% when electricity was applied) didn't shrink enough to really make the tentacles move very much.

So, I think my challenge for next year will be to figure out how to actually pull this stuff off. And I think leaving it for LAST is an issue. I suspect I need to start off with some of that REALLY EARLY, get the basics worked out, then drop it, deal with building-the-costume priorities, and then come back to it again.

Based on this, I seriously doubt I'll take first place at my local bar tonight. Second or third is far more likely. Oh well. Second place was $300 last year.

I'll still have Sunday Afternoon's trunk-or-treat at my church to entertain about 400 kids! And this time, I should be able to SEE them !!

Thanks!

re: Jurassic Park Velociraptor Build Thread; Target Date --> Halloween 2013

Post-Halloween-Weekend Update !:

On Saturday Night, we did our "usual Halloween thing": Following the morning's "Making Strides Against Breast Cancer" Walk, which we participate in with some of our extended family members and friends, we all have an "after party" at "Funky Town", a local, large retro bar. What's great about this bar is that you get people from all age groups and races. It's a wonderful mix of people!

They have a big Halloween Costume contest. And this year, I think the prizes were bigger.

Now, I've taken SECOND place for the last TWO YEARS IN A ROW (prior to this year).... first for Ironman in 2011:
064.JPG

....and then for Davey Jones in 2012:
12.jpg

dj_final_1.jpg

So, this year, I finally won FIRST PLACE !! $700 cash !! (As I always have done with past costume contest winnings, I donated two-thirds of the money to the American Cancer Society, in honor of the morning's walk. My sister-in-law is a Breast Cancer survivor.)

What was terrific was, a relative of ours had made a special song request earlier in the evening, but the D.J. didn't play it.... until AFTER my wife and I were announced as first place winners! They had us do a sort of "Victory Dance" up on stage in front of everybody... to the requested song.... "Walk the Dinosaur" !! LOL !!!

Here are some photos of my costume taken that night, including one from when we were up doing our victory dance:

Here's something in this next photo that I had forgot to mention earlier in this build-thread: My wife came up with the idea for a quick-and-easy tongue. Bubble-wrap! We simply stapled it into a triangle shape, I panted it with a couple of coats of paint, and then I hot-glued its base into the mouth.

I'm including this one so that you can kind of see where / how my head ended up, position-wise:

We did have another event the next day / yesterday; a "Trunk-or-Treat" event at my church. I'm not sure if we'll get any pictures from that (taken by others) coming in soon. But I'm going to wait a day or two and then post about that event separately.

And yes, we DID get a photo taken just for the RPF's costume contest (with me holding up the required sign). I just don't have it posted yet. So I will be making an official thread for that contest at some point in the next day or two.

But for now, I gotta run. My mom just called and wants me to send her pics. <grin!>

Thanks!
