Suggestion Junkyard is better than Marketplace. (implemented)

Yet you've made a controversial and unpopular series of changes to the forum, unilaterally. Or did I miss where you asked for feedback prior to the changes being implemented?

Al can correct me if I'm wrong, but maybe he means that the Marketplace is a good source of parts, kits, unfinished projects, and fixer-uppers (not just runs and used/unwanted items).

Admit it... you are M. Night Shyamalan aren't you? You have to be because only M. Night would work so hard to put such a forced and awkward twist on a particular tale.

If you have some constructive criticism, I am listening. If all you have is more of the above, go troll somewhere else.

I can see that, and I suppose from a 'certain point of view' I can understand how that justifies the name Junkyard... wait... did I just make a Star Wars joke? I JUST said we were trying to be LESS Star Wars centric... ARGH!

So... two Klingons walk into a bar...

No, but you missed the part where Art is the owner of the Forum and can do what he pleases to it.:lol

I find it fascinating that so many feel the Marketplace plays such an important role here at the RPF and that the name also holds so much sentimental value. Personally, I tend to consider the Marketplace as an ancillary forum and not a forum that defines the site in the same way the props or costumes forums do. My view of the RPF is first and foremost as an information resource, not a store. The site could live without the marketplace, but it couldn't live without the the prop forum. Not that this has a lot to do with anything, but it is just interesting to see how different people tend to view different things.

Marketplace makes me think of a store. Junkyard makes me think of a place to swap and find things to help me build or complete something.

WinnDixie is a marketplace.

People who build stuff out of nothing or look for 'found' parts and cast offs go to a junkyard. Just my thought. I've never really put too much thought into it being related to star wars anymore. I tend to forget about prequels anyway.

I lament the former name, Junkyard. It has certain characteristic to it...marketplace sounds more. Well corporate... other than that trivial complaint, the site looks awesome!

Pee-wee: You all remember what to do whenever anybody says the secret word right?
All: Scream!
Pee-wee: That's right. For the rest of the day, whenever anybody says the secret word, scream real loud. Ready? Let's try it.

The secret word is OWNER........

Yes, that's how I've always seen that section of the forum.

I can see your point of view as well though Art, where you can please some of the people some of the time...

Different perceptions of what this place is, based upon the different agendas of individual members.

At the end of the day, a rose by any other name, and all that. I suppose the purpose of the section won't change and that's the important thing.

Anyway, I just wanted to understand the change a little further so thanks for the clarification.

The purpose for the Marketplace is definitely NOT changing. We have to get our toys from somewhere!:thumbsup

I too, NEVER equated the Junkyard with Star Wars.

All the changes, with some minor hiccups, are great.

The Junkyard is only a name, OK.

But it has a helluvalot of sentimental value.

The RPF is all about sharing, building, contributing, discussing, etc, but you must also not forget that when all that is said and done, owning an item that has been discussed, contributed to, and so forth, for many, is the ultimate "nerdgasm".

And where has this "nerdgasm" been obtained over the years ? The Junkyard of course.

Renaming the JY is, to me at least, like putting a fig leaf on a classical Greek statue.

Just my opinion.

Marketplace is truly awful, junkyard was great, but....

.....I'm not gonna lose any sleep over it :lol

so the JY is the penis of the RPF? :lol

Art, what would a group of reasonably-minded folk have to do to convince you to change the name back? What would it take? In other words, is this the absolute last word, or do we still have a chance? A petition with a certain amount of names, a compelling argument, etc?

I mean, I can live with it - I think the design changes are GREAT, but if there's any chance to change your mind, I'd like to try. Otherwise, I'll just STFU. :)

BTW, I sent you a PM completely unrelated - to do with Las Vegas - would love to have you go dig for that one, or I can send it to Mirax instead. :)

I understand the need to cater to everyone's needs by not focusing on a particular franchise, but the back and forth above is just silly. Seems like a waste of time to argue so much about a name. The function is still the same.

People seem to like junkyard due to the uniqueness and think Marketplace is sterile. How about calling it a bazaar? Sort of meet in the middle? Could always put up a poll and see what the members think. Anyway, just a suggestion. I like the overall site changes.

Please don't go creating a petition and having people sign it. That isn't going to get you anywhere. I need to sit and think about what has been said and the arguments that have been presented and talk with a few people privately to hash it out. I can tell you that I am pretty committed to the change. I know a lot of people think we just change things on a whim, but there is actually a lot of thought that goes into it and a good bit of consideration, which I think is part of the problem some members have with the way we implement change. They don't see the process, only the final result and by the time we get to that final result we are pretty well entrenched in the idea that what we have changed is the right decision. It is a new thing for the members, but it is something we have likely been hashing out behind the scenes for months.

I don't want to give you false hope, but I won't say we absolutely aren't willing to give it some more thought.

Will check on that and see what I missed.
