Julien’s Upcoming Hero Phaser & Communicator Auction

I was born in 70' and when I was brought home from the hospital Star Trek was most likely what was on TV that day as my family lived in the L.A. area so there was no shortage of reruns..... There definitely wasn't much of anything Trek in stores other than the Mego toys and the early Novels....

I remember being 10 and my Dad had me helping him do autobody work (yep I'm that kid who learned how to pull dents, mix & apply Bondo....) by the age of 12 I had done my first complete autobody repair ..... in my Dad's custom paint and body shop. Dad came up to me an showed me a flyer for a Star Trek Convention I told him about at least a dozen times. Then he gave me a $100 bucks for doing my first autobody repair and that Friday I went to my first Star Trek convention... I didn't get any prop replicas that day, bunch of blue prints a uniform top and tons of pictures......

But yeah.... We definitely are at a point in the history of TOS props few can imagine.....

I do wish the great Sporak was around... I got to know him a tiny bit he was an amazing person.....

As far as Star Trek the franchise goes, naw it's not in ruins... It's at the point where it's being reborn in order to remain relevant... Sure there are aspects I don't like...

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I did a few scratch build Tricorder back in the early 2000's some even made them into fan films, in which I had to fight to get them back from the production as they thought I was donating them to their production which is one of a few reasons the STNV episode "Enemy Starfleet!" ended up using a lot of DST stuff as props .....

Now when I do scratch build Tricorders they have almost always go to private collectors with no association with the prop hobby. I've done a few for various small sci-fi and cultural museums..... Yet I'm at that point I build to relax and when I build I just find myself upgrading DST's to various degree's or I'll refurbish older fan builds, sometimes I just order a 3D print and take a paint brush and get down doing my thing....

Oooopps didn't mean to ramble like this....
That’s the best kind of story; thanks for sharing because we can relate. Memories tend to flow out like that, and every TOS enthusiast has their own personal experiences about when, where, and how we first found this wondrous extension of the medium. For me, it was building the AMT Star Trek Exploration set, and I will cherish that emotional overload forever. Watching this drama unfold, with events diametrically opposite to the ‘Alleged Screen Used Hero TOS Phaser up for auction (now the aftermath),’ is an uplifting and welcome sea change.

No kidding. What a breath of fresh air to see these props reappear out of nowhere and be authenticated within a very short span of time, without drama, scammers, or endless arguments.

Here are a couple of my builds with these two 3D Printed phasers I was experimenting to see what could be done simply by only changing what was needed. I personally enjoy adding details and in this case there really wasn't much that was actually needed.

Painted the "metal", handles and added in small details to complete the look.

Let's see which one folks think have the more accurate handle color..... Neither color is accurate, yet the colors were chosen to make the phasers look more visually appealing (doing eye candy paint jobs is kind of fun)

You are quite welcome.

I really peaked with my building skills quite young in life and everything I do has more to do with color matching or using the right accent colors. I have a 99% accurate midgrade replica based off of photos I took of a screen used midgrade, I matched and mixed the colors for it by hand at the time I mixed those colors I had well over 30 years of color matching experience. it was a lot of work actually designing tells into that replica as it was built using the nicest of R. Shanko's midgrade kits before the S&W or the "Super Mids" Ron currently sells.

With this new screen used phaser all of my questions came down to paint, materials and construction techniques as I am so well versed in what materials should have been used and how they were applied. Wah Chang wasn't in the Union yet like many prop builders who got their start in the 1930's to 1950's he probably learned model building trade from trained model makers that learned their skills in the early 20th century..

Damn I'm rambling on again sorry folks

The supremely talented John Long did a masterful & restrained touch up on the TMOST/Finney/Cloud Minders phaser. Now I just need $100k....

Hmmmm…I have a problem with this re-discovered Beta Comm…

The moment I heard that the “guts” of this prop contained nothing but a common stopwatch, I became suspicious.

So, I rechecked my references…

Communicator “guts” should be composed of musty, random, and obsolete 1960’s radio technology and not stopwatches.

It's all in there, just miniaturized.

The auction will have to warn potential buyers that a transtator is not included with purchase.

I got 99 problems but Radio Shack ain't one!

For me the big revelation is the brass pins for reinforcing the connection between the grip and the P2. We've seen these holes in the bottom of the original Greg Jein phaser but not the pins themselves.

It seems the pins would have to be inserted from inside the p2 body, with the p2 body half shell still off, after the grip was twist-locked to the phaser. Cumbersome, but it explains how they were able to put up with those lamp plugs, which otherwise are too floppy to be reliable.

I was about to say the same thing…it appears to be “friction fit”, when the handle is attached, to the side of the female part of the baklite plug.

I am wondering if that was added later in the series due to the twist lock becoming problematic during regular use…inadvertent twisting of the handle may have occurred causing the phaser II body to “flop” off the handle as a result?
