John Carter (Post-release)

Re: John Carter

I just saw this and I have to say, I LOVED it. It's Disney. It's fun for the whole family. What's the problem? It's weird. How much people hated it. I really liked it. I thought it was fun and the world they created was so cool!

I know it's a pipe dream, but I hope maybe it'll do so well on DVD/Bluray over the next few years that they can do a scaled down sequel.

Anyone else agree and really like this movie?

Re: John Carter

It was better than I expected it to be but it still could have been truer to the books and Mars could have looked a bit more Mars like, more red in the color correction for both the terrain and the Martians (forget what the red Martians were called).

One thing I liked was the 'Rome' reunion they had, all they needed were the actors who played Pullo and Vorenus and it would have been perfect.

Re: John Carter

DW3: "Woola the dog has to be more kid friendly. Make his teeth barely capable of puncturing paper and give him big dopey eyes, kinda like a Martian version of Pluto."
I'm with you except for this point. I really liked their depiction of Woola. I can imagine if I hadn't read the novels that I would have liked the movie more when I first watched it, but only the barest facade of the original story was still intact. Still, a fun movie to watch.

Re: John Carter

I had finally seen this on one of the movie channels a couple weeks back & it was much better than I expected.
I had missed it in the theater as it only played for 2 weeks & was dropped for poor attendance.

I really think that Disney should have come up with a much better movie title than just " John Carter " or at least called it " John Carter Of Mars "like it appears in the credits.

Re: John Carter

I've seen this a couple of times on the movie channels, and I can't see why this film didn't do better in the U.S. Box Office. I honestly didn't have any problems with it (but then again, I've never really read any of the "Barsoom" stories, nor was I familiar with the story or any of the characters until I saw the film). So, I could be seeing things one-sided. But apparently my initial interpretation from the trailer was incorrect.

Re: John Carter

Disney supposedly had an advertising budget of Millions. Someone must have absconded with most of it, because they didn't promote it for ****. The first trailer they put out was weak, and killed 50% of their potential audience, and this movie should have Ruled Comicon and had fans slavering to see it.

Re: John Carter

All this time has given me perspective. I said that I thought the movie was great, but now I see that I was correct. It was.

Boy, this place looks different....

Re: John Carter

The initial trailer was really bad. No desire to see it in the theaters after that.

I enjoyed it, but it still seems like a throw away.

Yeah, that was my take, too.

I did like the way that alien dude said, "VOR-GIN-YA!", though! lol

And they removed the "Warlord of Mars" subtitle from all of the promotional material soon after they started promoting it, so people unfamiliar with Burroughs' work had little idea what the movie was about. If they had promoted it properly, it could have been the start of another lucrative franchise for them; as is, it will probably remain a "one shot" movie that Disney considers to have been a "failure".

Re: John Carter

A really great film, I have it on bluray and have probably watched it 8 or 9 times now. 15 or 20 years from now it will be considered a classic

It could have but I think that by time Disney had since pulled out of ComicCon and saved all of their promos for their own D23 con, likely in order to try draw in some of the ComicCon crowd and more than just the Disneyphiles.

Re: John Carter

I'd love to see someone doing replicas of the medallion.

Love to see some props myself.

I have a couple medallions...paid too much for one and reasonable for the other. Lucky to get a free necklace from DisneyRewards....also came up with the keychain.

I commissioned a Woola and a Thoat and rider in 3D...the Woola was excellent and is available along with a well done Tars Tarkas bust on Shapeways by the same artist :)

Edit...sheesh! They are now for free on TurboSquid from the original artist! Enjoy...insert grumble here :(

Unlike many I really enjoyed the film...but hey, I got my Grandfather's copy of Princess of Mars from my Mother...

Re: John Carter

I think it was a mix of things. The film was greenlit by people who had just left Disney and it's only professional courtesy to completely disavow anything somebody else had their hand in, in a very childish, petty way.

Then there is the "formula", it's a kind of scoreboard with things that worked or didn't work in past films and are required to be inserted into a film to enhance its box office potential. Mars is considered box office poison, because several films with Mars in the title have flopped in the past, so it was dropped from the title.

Next you have plain mistakes, people messed up, they didn't sell the film the right way etc. Also how do you sell a film whose originals are responsible for most of your competition's biggest hits ? "It inspired everybody else's success and we're gonna bank on it, showing you the crappy ancient original from the 1900's, a time most moviegoers consider to be old and stupid."

And then there is the Lucasfilm merger, people were probably already far too busy to deal with John Carter with their heads full of Star Wars. "Who cares if JC bombs, we still have Star Wars !!!"
