Re: John Carter
I would like to hear from those who did not go see the movie and get their perspectives on why this movie didn't interest them. Being one who hasn't seen this movie and still has little to no desire in seeing at all, I guess I'll start. .
Before last night, I would have answered: I don't understand why some guy with a boring Earth name is fighting in some other universe. The CGI didn't look bad to me, I just didn't know enough about the character or the story to get me to the theater or interested in renting it.
Last night, to celebrate school being out, my family was searching through On Demand movies and the movies we all would watch and had to decide between were: 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, Back to the Future, The Last Starfighter and... John Carter.
After watching all the trailers the boys picked John Carter.
We LOVED it. All of us. Even my 14 year old who was at first complaining about all the science issues ended up sticking around instead of bailing on us like he often does when he gets bored.
So - marketing and title was a big problem getting us to the theater. Very glad we did finally watch it.
And actually, I don't know if it would have been as enjoyable if I had known going in what it was about. I had no idea he was going to be on MARS. (sorry, just not up on all the old sci-fi books/history) So when he started to walk and jump and was super strong, it was really a fun surprise. Maybe knowing that ahead of time would have gotten me to watch sooner, but not been as fun? Hard to say.
...the average adult who is going to the movies and wants to see a Sci-fi movie will see ONE word on the poster or trailer that will turn them away.. Disney. A Disney Sci-Fi SCREAMS kids movie.. So you kill most of the sci fi community right there. Ill admit that the D word kept me from seeing it till now...
Not just adults, my 14 year old didn't want to see it at first because of his low expectations from Disney. As I said above, our whole family loved it.
To me, that is why it was a poor choice as a big budget movie. Instead of inspiring imagination, it strains the ability to suspend disbelief.
I don't know - I had a little bit of that going in, but once I got it in my head when this was written, I was fine.
That is probably right on. Very sad for the creative types, though. And for those who want creative type movies.
