Re: John Carpenter and Dan O`Bannons - Dark Star

Thanks guys.

Possible Dark Star patch set.

I want to have a complete set of patches as worn by the crew of the Dark Star.
As these patches do not exist, I will have them made from scratch from a fellow i have worked with before whos work is superb.

Roughly, it costs around up to $60.00AUS depending on size to make the first patch of any amount in a run eg, five seperate patch designs would cost around $300.00AUS. At the end you would have 5 completed patches.
The cost to produce patches after the initial one is around $7 - $10 each.
As you can see, all the cost is in the set up of the initial patches.

The aim is to get maybe half a dozen or so people who want a set and everyone absorb the initial cost of the set up. Only the sets that are ordered will be produced.

I used this same system to produce the set of Blade Runner street cop patches on Propsummit some time back and it was a great success. The quality of the patches produced were second to none.

This will pretty much be a group effort as the input of those wanting the set will be needed to determine size, colour, etc.
So dont be discouraged when the copies appear, probably before i finish typing, if the prvious project is any indication.

What is needed now is for someone with the equipment and ability to draw the design of each patch. It is these designs the patch guy will use as the basis to produce them. Whoever can do this will get a set for free, even if i am the only one who wants a set.

At this stage i want to do both the generic upper arm patches, Talbys right breast patch, Dolttles Hex and modified military patch and possibly all the surname patches. Thats 10 patches all together in the set at this point but will have to see what pans out.

Just starting an interest list at this point.

Heres the best caps i could get of the visible patches.

I know that this is for "Dark Star", but apparently, "The Thing" is covered under here as well.

For some suggestions, if you can find it, maybe R.J. MacCready's tape recorder with the tape he recorded in the film that he had planned on hiding it. Garry's revolver, Clark's pocket knife, Nauls' boombox, the shards of the UFO's metal that was brought back along with the tape from the Norwegian camp and the sample dishes used by MacCready to do the blood test. If you're really into the idea, maybe the Chess Game that Mac is playing the first time we see him. I also can suggest some items from the video game "The Thing", which is sort of a sequel to the film. One item I can think of is the single use blood test device that the player can use on himself or others

Some great ideas there CB, thanks plenty.

Did some searching around and i think there could be a chance the uniform patches are all existing patches and wont need to be reproduced.

Found Talbys patch locally believe it or not and its from the US Army 40th Division.

Also found Dolttles Hex amd 3 stripes patch. Waiting to hear about the hex patch as its from a lot of 100 and the 3 stripe patch is from the US Navy.

Going to spend some time searching around these ebay parameters, and hopefully can dig up the last two.

Vintage army patches
Vintage military patches
Vintage Navy patches
Vintage Air Force patches
Vintage space patches

Or if anyone can put me in contact with any US military insignia boffins, that would be great.

Re: John Carpenter and Dan O`Bannons - Dark Star

Didnt find any more matches on available patches and am sick of looking at them so am going to make the four remaining myself.

The collections coming along nicely, the rolls got a little smaller since it was added but who doesnt love a practical/accurate replica?
Got a feeling the writing on the 8 track is red but will have to wait for the new dvd to confirm.

As space is always an issue, found a way to have a smaller version of the beach ball creature. Got a cheap 1/6 scale model of the Black Lagoon creature and will use its hands
for the feet and then got some mini beach balls, around 7inch diameter and its just a matter of painting it up.

It is just as easy and inexpensive to havethe full size version, the hands are on ebay for around $30-40 and similar style, scale beach balls are readily available,
would love to see someone do a 1:1 version.

That's great work man!

I was watching the DVD extras.
O'Bannon said that George Lucas had asked why they didn't put something on the ball to make it look a little more real. O'Bannon was well if you were there George maybe.....

But I think the film would lose some of it's charm without the little SOB just the way he is. Or her. Or whatever it is.

Re: John Carpenter and Dan O`Bannons - Dark Star

.....on the alien that is, the diary tape looks perfect.

Re: John Carpenter and Dan O`Bannons - Dark Star

Thanks very much guys.
Im still waiting for the new dvd to arrive from the US and im sure it will provide a whole new level of detail so i can start a few other projects.

Re: John Carpenter and Dan O`Bannons - Dark Star

Thought the only way to display the patches was on a costume so in the spirit of this collection found a great pair of overalls online for 5 bucks, the collars
not accurate but the rest is more than passable. So heres the first patch on the Doolittle costume.

Found a great pic with a better than standard Dark Star resolution.
