JJ ABRAMS Enterprise

Nice job, and y'know what?

Whittle that deflector dish down about 25% and I would have been happy with that being the new design.

A nice amalgam of the Big Es that have come before.

Re: JJ AMBRANS Enterprise

That's a new kind of humble. :lol

Funny, I always thought the H was for honest.
That's how I've always used it - guess I'll have to type these things in future, nothing worse than not being able to say what you mean and not meaning when you say it.

Re: JJ AMBRANS Enterprise

I'm a casual Trek fan - no where near the TOS die hards that seem to be speaking out a lot. I've seen all the films, watched TOS in passing and was a regular viewer of the TNG. I got started watching DS9 and that didn't last long, didn't last as long with Voyager, I may have watched one episode of Enterprise. I have a love/hate relationship with the films... I see them, I tend to enjoy them... but, with as many DVD's as I buy, I only own the first two on DVD. I can't recall which is which (other than the first 4), and I think IV is terrible (time traveling fricking whales, man?)

I am excited for this new film. I like the new uniforms, they make sense to me. I like the idea of updating the old series... our visions of the future have changed, it doesn't make sense to have the old uniforms or the old Enterprise. (Ok, I admit some of the casting seems a little peculiar to me, but in reality - Simon Pegg, John Cho aren't "names" outside certain circles) I'm glad that what they've done reflects some of the ideas of the old series... yeah, it's not identical, but it pays enough respect to my eyes.

That being said, the new Enterprise just seems to be some bad design work. It looks deformed or misproportioned. It looks recognizable enough as the ship we know and love, just seems off. I don't care if it doesn't resemble "your" ideal ship perfectly, it just seems like it doesn't flow aethetically.

The problem to my eyes lies in the area that the bottom part of the ship, below the saucer and nacelles. It needs to be thicker where the nacelles ajoin the ship... and the front part of the nacelles seem a tad too thick.

But, I think this will work fine on screen... I can't wait to see better angles of her.

Re: JJ AMBRANS Enterprise

Still like JJ's version better then any of the ones with the tweaks here so far.
And the longer I see the new look the more I like it.(y)thumbsup

Re: JJ AMBRANS Enterprise

On reflection I realize that what I'm really not digging is the warp engine nacelles and support struts. Too big, too "jet engine-y", and the supports are hideous.

The rest though... is pretty nice. Mostly straight off off the TMP Enterprise, but distorted.

The larger-diameter deflector dish is actually present in the two TOS pilot episodes. The diameter was later reduced.

Yeah... I see what y'mean - more like the production model. Made it glow yellow like in the Motion Picture. Added a few more missing markings/lights (nostalgia), and threw em a bone with the weird nacelle vents.

(y)thumbsup(y)thumbsup:thumbsup for the win.

RIP, Constitution Class : U.S.S. Enterprise : NCC-1701

Welcome, Apathy Class : U.S.S. Enterprise : NCC-1701

May you make lots of money from the mouthbreathing filmgoers of 2009.

Re: JJ AMBRANS Enterprise

I get a 1950's space hot rod feel for this design. Very uninspired or was just handed off to the wrong person for the job. What else worries me is the sleekness/aerodynamics of the design which god forbid this thing better not liftoff from the San Francisco shipyard drydock and flyoff into space.

NICE shop job... For 15 minutes! :D

And I see exactly where everyone is coming from.

But it's really not gonna' matter, once you're sitting there, watching the film run it's course. It never does.

For example... I HATE the new Batman suit, as a solely used Batman suit. If it was just for use with the Batpod, then fine... But it's not.

But it didn't take away from the film for me. It was barely even visible in the film.

Now, this subtle change from the look of the original Enterprise, is NOWHERE NEAR AS BAD as what they did with The Batmobile, versus the drastic move over to the Tumbler.

Yet a bazillion Batman fans have gotten used to the Tumbler, haven't they?

Each version of the story uses what fits the story. The '66 Batmobile fit the Sixties. The '89 Batmobile fits the Eighties. The Schumacher ones fit... Well... They fit nothing actually... They sucked. But the Tumbler fits for the military uses that it was intended for.

Star Trek isn't about The Enterprise. It's about opening up the human mind, for everyone to learn and prosper from, through unity, exploration and respect for all living life.

I REALLY don't think Gene Roddenberry would give a flying rat's a$$ about this new look.

It's being built there, how else would it get into space??

Re: JJ AMBRANS Enterprise

......and respect for all living life.

Unless you're not part of the federation, like the Klingons and Romulans. Then they blow the crap out of you.

All Star Trek does is extend the human propensity for violence out into the galaxy so it appears we all get along HERE. We still blow the crap out of the "bad guys". It's just the "bad guys" are not human.

Re: JJ AMBRANS Enterprise

I still think the Death Star could blow the sh^t out of the SS Enterprise.

"Well if we load our positronic torpedos and neutralize the sphoric atmospherical----"

BOOM! While the crew was contemplating what weapons to use with their techno-babble, Tarkin simply said, "Fire."

Re: JJ AMBRANS Enterprise

I remember when the first pic of the NX-01 came out and all the "I Hate it...It's just an Akira Class Flipped over" crying started. Yet people came to love that ship. I'm not going to knee jerk based off of one pic, I want to see her in action first.

You know what is keeping SW alive and Trek Dead? Change. SW has all sorts of possibilities to run with- and they are. I just picked up a Titanium Tie Defender, that's from the Video game, yet there's something new I didn't have before, instead of Johnny Lightning and their Umpteenth Paint job. Trek under Brannon and Braga has dead ended.

I laugh at cries of "Continuity" Trek has always wiped it's own ass with continuity. If it can get a Reboot like BSG did, then I'm all for it. If it can be brought to life, I'm all for it. If it means new models and props to acquire, I'm all for it. Let's wait and see before the cries of "It Sucks" come out.

Re: JJ AMBRANS Enterprise

I would argue that Star Wars is TOTALLY dead, and that George Lucas killed it, but that is for another thread! :lol
